Clinton: Sanders’ promises ‘cannot be kept’

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Whether Thursday night&#8217;s game was the last ever in the Coughlin gym &#8212; and that&#8217;s something that&#8217;s uncertain &#8212; at least the seniors went out in style.Seniors Devin Rajza, Eli McAllister and Nick Cerep all scored in double figures as the Crusaders defeated Pittston Area 48-40 to clinch a winning record for the first time since the 2009-10 season.Coughlin improved to 7-7 in Division 1 of the Wyoming Valley Conference and 12-10 overall.&#8220;Five out of my six guys played varsity basketball as freshmen. Now they&#8217;re juniors and seniors,&#8221; Coughlin coach Mike Day said. &#8220;As sophomores we won three, as juniors we won eight and as seniors we won 12.&#8220;It&#8217;s our first winning season and it&#8217;s great accomplishment in Division 1. Growing up in Division 1 is not and easy thing. I&#8217;m so happy for them.&#8221;The Crusaders have at least one game left when they play in the District 2 Class 3A playoffs. The game will be on the road as Honesdale defeated North Pocono 77-59 to keep Coughlin from getting the eighth seed &#8212; the final spot for a home game.But that doesn&#8217;t mean no home games next season as Coughlin is scheduled to be demolished to make way for a new school that will be part of the Coughlin-Meyers merger. Depending upon how everything progresses, Coughlin could be playing some exhibition home games next season.&#8220;They may play in December,&#8221; said John Quinn, who is a member of the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board and coached Coughlin boys basketball from 1974-2005. &#8220;We we&#8217;re going to have a sendoff for them and we still will. But it looks like it&#8217;s going to be in December.&#8221;After that, Coughlin would likely shift home games to Solomon-Plains Junior High, which has seating on only one side, but enough for 500-600 spectators, until the new school is completed.&#8220;That may be an option for us,&#8221; Coughlin athletic director Cliff Jones said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a pretty big gym, the junior high gym. That would probably be the logical place.&#8221;As for Thursday, Coughlin led for good after Cerep hit a free throw for a 3-2 lead at 6:09 of the first quarter. The Crusaders went on several small runs, building the lead to 23-11 on a 3-pointer by Rajza early in the third quarter.Pittston Area (3-11 Div. 1, 7-15), though, recovered from a 5 of 18 shooting performance in the first half to close within 31-27 late in the third. The Patriots did so behind Chris Klein, who nailed three 3-pointers as part of his team-high 12 points.&#8220;We hit open looks in the second half,&#8221; Pittston Area coach Alan Kiesinger said, &#8220;but we struggled rebounding the ball.&#8221;Pittston Area also struggled to get to the foul line, shooting just two free throws all game. Coughlin was 11 of 19 from the line, including a free throw by McAllister with four seconds left that could be the final point scored by a Crusaders in the gym. It was Jose Rivera&#8217;s four free throws in the final minute, however, that sealed the win.Charles Cobbs scored Coughlin&#8217;s final basket on a rebound with 3:02 to play.Rajza finished with 13 points followed by McAllister with 11 and Cerep with 10.GAR 72, Hanover Area 59Will Johnson led four GAR players in double figures with 21 points as GAR won to earn a first-place tie atop Division 2 with Nanticoke. The Grenadiers and Trojans will hold a playoff for the title at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilkes&#8217; Marts Center.Keyshawn Palmer added 14 points for GAR while Dajon Rush had 13. The Hawkeyes were led by Nick Minich (13) and Tyler Diggs (12).Dallas 61,Wyoming Valley West 51The Mounts jumped out to a 26-8 lead at halftime en route to a road win over the Spartans. Jay Bittner scored 21 points for Dallas and went 13-of-16 from the foul line. Joey Parsons finished with 11 points while Nick Kocher and Tanner Gattuso had 10 apiece.Aaron Austin (13 points), Noah Frace (12) and Tyler Yankosky (12) topped Valley West.Meyers 58, Holy Redeemer 49Matt Dessoye scored 14 points and Raheem Twyman finished with 11 for WVC Division 3 champion Meyers.
