FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — Military bases in three U.S. states will share $17.5 million in conservation funding to protect longleaf pine forests used for training troops and for helping threatened species recover. The conservation efforts at bases in Georgia, Mississippi and North Carolina are among 84 conservation projects chosen to receive $720 million from the federal government as well as private and nonprofit partners. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the announcement Friday at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia. Fort Stewart has nearly 280,000 acres of longleaf pine forest, home to endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers. Its $2 million share will go toward establishing a buffer of undeveloped land around the base. Vilsack was also scheduled to visit Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to discuss $3.6 million aimed at helping black owners hold onto their undeveloped land.
