Lock Haven junior Brad Emerick was named Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Week. The Coughlin grad returned to the lineup after a 44-day layoff and sealed the Bald Eagles historic victory over Michigan State at home last Friday nightWith the score tied at 15-15, Emerick took the mat in the final bout &#8211; 285 pounds. He proceeded to grind out a tough 3-0 victory over Dimitrius Renfroe that gave Lock Haven an 18-15 victory over the Spartans of the Big Ten Conference. Emerick had been sidelined since Dec. 29 with an injury.The win marked Lock Haven&#8217;s first victory in four tries against Michigan State and marked the Bald Eagles&#8217; first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2002.&#8220;It was great to see Brad back in action,&#8221; coach Scott Moore said. &#8220;He wrestled with confidence and executed some great wrestling.&#8221;The coach feels this is just the beginning for Emerick.&#8220;I believe Brad will use this as a building block for the future and I couldn&#8217;t be prouder for him for his efforts,&#8221; Moore said. &#8220;The team needed him and he stepped up big.&#8221;Lock Haven travels to Fairfax, VA Thursday for a EWL match against George Mason.Big year for RoperJunior Travis Roper is 13-1 on the season and leads the Kutztown wrestling team with four pins and three major decisions. He competes at 141 pounds. The Wyoming Valley West grad is 12-1 in dual matches after he took a 17-1 technical fall decision in a 22-12 victory over Shippensburg last Friday. Prior to that, he took a major decision (20-7) in a 28-9 victory over Millersville.Roper is currently ranked third in Super Region I after posting a 3-0 record in the Super Region 2 Duals (Jan. 30) and a 3-0 mark in the Virginia Duals (Jan. 8).The NCAA Super Region I Championships are slated for Feb. 26 and 27 in Erie. Roper placed fifth last year as a freshman.Hicks helps the Pride The Widener men&#8217;s swim team captured its 13th Middle Atlantic Conference title last weekend in York and junior Jeff Hicks had a big hand in the victory.Hicks, a Hazleton Area grad, was a member of three winning relay teams. He swam anchor on the 800-free relay which posted a pool record time of 6:59.20. And, he anchored 200-free relay which won in a pool record time of 1:23.81. He was also on the winning 400-free relay which won in a MAC record time of 3:04.36. And he helped the 400-medley relay finish third.Individually, Hicks finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:23.87), sixth in the 100 freestyle (48.09) and eighth in the 50 freestyle (22.21).&#8220;Jeff is a true leader on the team and the kind of swimmer that you know will show up and give it everything he has,&#8221; coach Katy Peterson said.Honor for JendrzejewskiLebanon Valley junior Olivia Jendrzejewski, a former Hanover Area athlete, was named Middle Atlantic Conference Field Athlete of the Week it was announced Monday.Jendrzejewski, competing in the Susquehanna Invitational last Saturday in Selinsgrove, captured the high jump with a school record 5-07 effort, which is tied for fourth best in Division III. She had held the previous mark (5-5 &#190;). She also captured the long jump with a distance of 17-02 &#188;.The team returns to Selinsgrove Saturday for the SU Open prior to the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship Feb. 26-27 in Bethlehem.Hayward, mates looking goodSenior Dannah Hayward, a Coughlin grad, ran the anchor leg on the St. Joseph&#8217;s 4x400 relay that finished seventh in the Fastrack National Qualifier last Friday at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island. The team posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:51.95, just 2.8 seconds off the current school record.&#8220;We put together a strong team with the intention of getting qualified for the ECACs and we did just that,&#8221; coach Melody O&#8217;Reilly said. &#8220;Hannah and the others put themselves in a better position going into the A-10 meet.&#8221;Another Coughlin grad, freshman Nathaniela Bourdeau finished 13th in the 200-meter dash with a collegiate-best time of 24.96 to improve her seed for the ECACs.The Atlantic-10 Championship will start Friday in Kingston, R.I, the ECAC meet March 5-7 in Boston.Another big effort for RomeSophomore All-American Regan Rome continues to dazzle on the track for the William &amp; Mary women&#8217;s team.Dallas grad Rome finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State Classic last Friday in Ames. Her time (15:58.07) was a personal best by more than 25 seconds and she became just the third runner in Griffin history to go under the 16-minute mark for the event. It currently ranks 11th in the nation and has been within the NCAA Division I qualifying window in four of the past five years.Rome will have three more chances to better her time starting with the Virginia Tech Challenge this weekend in Blacksburg. The NCAA Championship is March 11-12 in Birmingham, AL.Lewis stepping it upThe Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season is well underway and freshman Alexis Lewis has jumped to the forefront Iona women&#8217;s basketball team.Lewis, a Holy Redeemer grad, scored 21 points in a 73-46 victory over Niagara, 18 points in a 68-56 triumph over Monmouth and 17 points in a 70-56 victory over Canisius, all MAAC contests.The 5-foot-10 guard is averaging 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds. She also has 38 steals and 26 assists.The Gaels are 17-10 after a 1-5 start and are in first place in the league standings with a 13-3 mark. They have four games remaining including the season finale Feb. 28 against second place Quinnipiac (12-3), which scored a 62-61 victory over the Gaels last Friday in Hamden, CT to end Iona&#8217;s seven game win streak.Big night for Washington Freshman Darius Washington has been seeing limited action with the Eastern men&#8217;s basketball team but the Holy Redeemer grad scored a college career-high 14 points in 17 minutes of action in a 101-74 victory over Manhattanville last Saturday in St. David&#8217;s. He hit four of seven from outside the arc. In the Eagles previous game, he had 10 points in 13 minutes in an 86-77 loss to King&#8217;s.On the season, the 6-foot guard is averaging 5.0 points and has hit 11 of 24 3-point attempts (.458).Eastern is 11-12 on the season and 5-7 in MAC Freedom games.Fisher a dual wrestler Derek Fisher is a true freshman but the Greater Nanticoke Area grad is starting at 197 in dual meets for the Scranton wrestling team.Fisher is 7-15 overall but has a 5-6 record with two pins in dual competition including a 7-6 victory against Muhlenberg on Feb. 2. Last Sunday, in a 29-12 loss to Brockport, Fisher was credit with a forfeit victory.<style>
