St. Faustina celebrates in new parish center

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Students were enjoying Raspberry Pi at Wyoming Seminary Upper School on Saturday, but it had nothing to do with dessert.</p><p>Instead, a small computer allowed participants to make music through the use of code writing.</p><p>&#8220;A small $35 computer provides a great opportunity for learning and creating music,&#8221; said Satyasaran Sreeharikesan, a senior who helped organize and direct the event.</p><p>The event was designed by Upper School students for middle and high school students. It was free and open to public. It allowed students to apply their personal passions to academics.</p><p>The &#8220;Making Music by Coding,&#8221; which included the Raspberry Pi software, found students from sixth through 12th grade making speakers using a magnet, wire and a Post-It note and using a BeetBox, which used a vegetable, to make music.</p><p>To senior Kevin Platt, the event was the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between human- and computer-generated music.</p><p>Platt, a cellist, said as a freshman he had anticipated attending college to obtain a degree in music. But as he began to utilize a computer to make music, his career plans changed a bit.</p><p>&#8220;I now want to major in engineering,&#8221; he said.</p><p>But Platt won&#8217;t be leaving music behind.</p><p>Part of Seminary&#8217;s orchestra, Platt continues to play the cello and plans to continue to do so.</p><p>The future he said holds both analog and digital music, focused on the quality production of sound.</p><p>&#8220;Kevin is the perfect example the value of both classical musical training and technology,&#8221; music teacher Christiane Appenheimer-Vaida said.</p><p>In another room, students were engaged in a &#8220;Chemistry and Creativity&#8221; event allowing students to redesign Bratz dolls into more realistic role models by using acetone, paint and quick set clay.</p><p>The activity had social implication.</p><p>&#8220;There proportions would mean that they couldn&#8217;t even survive,&#8221; said senior Leana Pande, referring to the middle area of a doll. &#8220;She would be beyond anorexic, there would be no room for her organs.&#8221;</p><p>Pande, who led the group, said that contemporary dolls tend to have on a great deal of makeup which was removed and softened by participants.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing wrong with makeup, but it shouldn&#8217;t be a requirement,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Participants also styled the dolls hair practically, according to what profession that she might work in.</p><p>Another event provided an opportunity for student to create mobiles, cognizant of the principles of physics and engineering while utilizing recycled materials.</p><p>Senior Hunter Hughes, combined both fun and learning, as he directed the group in dynamics of balance, with hands covered in blue paint.</p><style>
