Fred J. Croop: Reduce theft among Pennsylvania’s volunteer emergency service groups with mandatory state audits

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; No arrest has been made in the fire that drove 11 people from their homes Saturday evening, but a suspect has been questioned and the investigation is aggressively continuing.</p><p>According to Kingston Fire Chief Frank Guido, investigators returned to the scene at 89 West Union Street to conduct tests and take samples. Guido said members of the Kingston fire and police departments were back on the scene, as well as state police investigators.</p><p>Guido confirmed that a suspect has been questions, but no arrests were made. He said the cause and manner of the fire are still under investigation.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a very active investigation,&#8221; Guido said.</p><p>Dave Skutnik, Regional Communications Manager for the American Red Cross, said the organization is providing emergency assistance for lodging, food and clothing for the three displaced families &#8212; a total of 11 people total.</p><p>Local emergency responders included the Hanover Township Fire Department, Kingston police, the Kingston/Forty Forty Fire Department and Edwardsville police.</p><p>On Saturday as firefighters battled the blaze, Bennett Bowdone, 30, who resided in the building, said he noticed a gentleman acting strange and bleeding near the apartment building before the fire. Bowdone said he and his girlfriend went to get food and came back to the fire and observed the man swinging his fists.</p><p>Calls came in around 6:45 p.m. to the report of flames coming from the apartment&#8217;s basement, but Guido said firefighters doused the flames before they could penetrate the first floor.</p><p>Guido said there were no injuries as a result of the fire.</p><p>Guido said there is smoke damage to the building and tenants will not be able to live in it for an unspecified numbers of days.</p><style>
