Neighbor and police officer deemed ‘heroes’ by son of West Hazleton woman pulled from house fire

<p>Kieran Sutton and Ben Robinson train together over the summer. This weekend, they will go head-to-head in a pair of races that could be classics &#8211; and easily the highlight of the PSAC Indoor Championships in Edinboro.</p><p>Shippensburg junior and Lake-Lehman grad Sutton is seeded first in both the mile (4:12.07) and the 3,000-meter run (8:10.23). Lock Haven senior and Tunkhannock grad Robinson is seeded second in the mile (4:13.08) and second in the 3k (8:20.91). On paper, both appear to be two-man races.</p><p>&#8220;I believe that they help push each other to faster times and look forward racing each other,&#8221; Lock Haven coach Aaron Russell said. &#8220;I think their work ethic and competitive nature has helped make them both better runners.&#8221;</p><p>Robinson had the lead in the mile, but Sutton moved ahead of him with the time he recorded at the St. Valentine&#8217;s Invitational Feb. 13 in Boston.</p><p>&#8220;Kieran is an incredible talent,&#8221; Raiders coach Dave Osanitsch said. &#8220;He will be a major factor in what we&#8217;re trying to do at the PSAC Championships.&#8221;</p><p>Beside the mile and the 3k, Russell plans to run Robinson in the DMR this weekend.</p><p>&#8220;Ben is very team-oriented so he&#8217;s willing to step in wherever the team needs the most help,&#8221; the coach said. &#8220;He&#8217;s been gaining a lot of confidence with his training over the last few weeks.&#8221;</p><p>And, the PSACs may not be the last time the two standouts face each other. The 3k marks for both runners are NCAA Division II provisional marks and good efforts this weekend could put them both in the NCAA Division II Championship March 11-12 in Pittsburg, KS.</p><p><strong>Alexis reaches 2,000</strong></p><p>Senior Peter Alexis became the fourth player in Philadelphia University men&#8217;s basketball history to score 2,000 points in a career.</p><p>The Holy Redeemer grad reached the milestone in a 65-43 victory over Georgian Court last Thursday in Lakewood, N.J. He was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time this season off that effort.</p><p>The 7-foot, 250-pound forward has started all 27 games for the Rams, who are 21-6 overall and 14-4 in CACC play. He&#8217;s averaging 19.6 points on 61.4 percent shooting from the field. He&#8217;s also averaging 9.0 rebounds and has 65 blocked shots. He has 12 double-doubles and is the Division II active career leader in rebounds (1,112), field goals made (825), blocked shots (255) and double-doubles (56).</p><p><strong>Rookie honor for Steward</strong></p><p>Redshirt freshman Tyriek Steward has been named PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week Monday for his play in two games last week with the Bloomsburg men&#8217;s basketball team.</p><p>The Meyers grad had 10 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes in an 85-59 victory over Millersville last Wednesday. He came back to score a college career-high 16 points with four rebounds in a 76-72 triumph over Cheyney last Saturday. He hit seven of nine from the field in that game.</p><p>The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder is averaging 6.4 points a game, but is averaging 10.0 points and 3.8 rebounds in his last five contests.</p><p>The Huskies, 17-8 overall and 15-6 in PSAC East play, close out their regular season at Shippensburg tonight. The game will decide if Bloomsburg plays at home or on the road in the first round of the PSAC playoffs which start Saturday.</p><p><strong>Karnopp to defend title</strong></p><p>Moravian senior Ryan Karnopp is the top seed in the pole vault heading into this weekend&#8217;s Landmark Conference Indoor Track Championships Saturday in Selinsgrove.</p><p>The Tunkhannock Area grad is listed a 14-5 &#188; well ahead of the second seed at 13-9 &#189;.</p><p>Karnopp is a two-time defending champion in the event. He won it last year (15-9) and went on to capture the ECAC Division III title and finished 10th in the NCAA Division III Championship. He had a Moravian and Landmark record performance earlier in the season at 16-6 &#190;.</p><p>As a freshman, Karnopp finished second before winning the crown the next two seasons.</p><p>Moravian freshman Ashley Dunn, another Tunkhannock Area grad, is seeded fifth in the women&#8217;s pole vault with a height of 8-4 &#188;.</p><p><strong>Viti, Bolton set to go</strong></p><p>Misericordia seniors Amy Viti and Bianca Bolton are ready to make some noise in this weekend&#8217;s Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track Championships in Bethlehem.</p><p>Viti, a Hanover Area grad, is seeded first in both the 800-meter run (2:14.22) and the 1,000-meter run (2:58.83). Bolton, a Pittston Area grad, is second in the 800 (2:21.24), is first in the mile (5:14.48) and fifth in the 5,000-meter run (18:33.19).</p><p>Viti runs leadoff and Bolton anchor on the Cougars distance medley relay which enters the championship with the best time (12:11.25).</p><p><strong>Grego helps Golden Rams</strong></p><p>The West Chester women&#8217;s swim team captured the PSAC championship last week in York and freshman Felicia Grego scored in all five of the events she competed in.</p><p>The Hazleton Area grad finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:07.74), eighth in the 400 IM (4:41.77), ninth in the 100 butterfly (57.77) and 11th in the 200 IM (2:09.50). She also swam a leg on the 400 medley relay which finished second in 3:53.47.</p><p>The Golden Rams totaled 715.5 points to capture their 10th straight title.</p><p><strong>Grzech scores points</strong></p><p>Sophomore Josh Grzech helped Bloomsburg finish second to West Chester in the men&#8217;s PSAC Swim Championships. The Crestwood grad was a member of the 400-free relay which finished first in a league record time of 2:59.56.</p><p>He also was a member of the 200-free relay which finished second in 6:47.91. Individually, Grzech tied for third in the 100 backstroke (50.68), was fourth in the 100 freestyle (45.58) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (50.23).</p><style>
