PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto says he's putting an end to "extra" pay some police officers receive while on suspension. Peduto is responding to the case of 47-year-old Sgt. Stephen Matakovich. He's been receiving his $69,000 salary plus pay for court appearances and extra details he could be working if he weren't on disciplinary leave. The FBI is reviewing Matakovich's arrest of a drunken man in November, and the district attorney plans to refile criminal charges against Matakovich for allegedly shoving and striking the suspect without justification. A police union attorney says Matakovich is entitled to the extra pay under the city's police contract because his internal investigation has taken more than 30 days. But the mayor says the extra pay is a policy begun under his predecessor, not a contract issue. The police union plans a grievance.
