Still decompressing from his whirlwind introduction at Penn State, Matt Limegrover acknowledged that this is all going to take some time.Limegrover and Tim Banks are both still trying to settle in as the Nittany Lions&#8217; two newest assistant coaches before spring practice starts up on March 18. Limegrover (offensive line) has the more scrutinized job than Banks (safeties) because of the Lions&#8217; struggles at the position the past few seasons.With some of Penn State&#8217;s veteran linemen about to play for their third different position coach, they asked Limegrover point blank how he&#8217;s going to help them improve.&#8220;I don&#8217;t have a magic wand,&#8221; Limegrover said. &#8220;When (Lions coach James Franklin) hired me, it wasn&#8217;t as though everything was cured. One thing I told (the players) was that the only way to get out of this thing is we have to have that chip on our shoulder and work every single day. Don&#8217;t B.S. me and tell me you want this to change and then not go out and work toward this change.&#8220;I&#8217;ve really seen that (drive) in guys I&#8217;ve talked to and I&#8217;ve seen that in workouts and how they go about their business in the building. I&#8217;m very impressed with that. If you&#8217;re gonna front me up and talk the talk, hey, you&#8217;ve gotta walk the walk. To this point, they really have. Which is exciting.&#8221;No hard feelings?Banks&#8217; hiring raised some eyebrows because he had been on Illinois&#8217; coaching staff when Tim Beckman infamously sent his assistants out to State College to recruit Penn State players.Though it was a legal tactic &#8212; as part of sanctions against the Lions, the NCAA ruled that the players were free to transfer without penalty &#8212; it was widely panned across the country and was the first of several black marks on Beckman&#8217;s reputation.Last month, Franklin said Banks &#8220;was put in a very difficult situation&#8221; and that the matter had been discussed prior to his hiring at Penn State.For his part, Banks said he has been &#8220;welcomed with open arms&#8221; by Penn State players, only a small handful of whom were on the roster when the incident occurred back in July 2012.&#8220;That was a situation that&#8217;s greatly regrettable for all parties involved,&#8221; Banks said. &#8220;From the top of the administration to the coaching staff. If you had a chance to do it again, better decisions would have been made.&#8220;But the kids have been great. They&#8217;ve treated me like a Nittany Lion. It&#8217;s been awesome.&#8221;Hack takes the stageAs fate would have it, Christian Hackenberg ended up speaking Thursday at the same time as his once (and future?) coach, Bill O&#8217;Brien.With both men in Indianapolis for the annual NFL Combine, the record-setting Penn State quarterback had his media session some 30 yards away from the one held by O&#8217;Brien, who is entering his third season as coach of the Houston Texans after two years in Happy Valley.&#8220;He&#8217;s a great kid, comes from a great family,&#8221; O&#8217;Brien told reporters in Indianapolis. &#8220;I recruited him. I&#8217;ve known him since he was 17 years old when he was at Fork Union. So I&#8217;ve known him for a long time. I know his parents, his brothers.&#8220;He&#8217;s a humble kid. He&#8217;s talented. Smart. Good guy to be around and I enjoyed coaching him his first year at Penn State.&#8221;The Texans badly need a quarterback. But final decisions at the draft will be made by Texans general manager Rick Smith, not O&#8217;Brien. Not to mention that he could easily end up on another team &#8212; Hackenberg mentioned he sat down with Chicago Bears on Wednesday night.With that in mind, Hackenberg downplayed the relationship a bit when he fielded multiple questions about O&#8217;Brien and Houston.&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a great opportunity,&#8221; Hackenberg said of the Texans. &#8220;But at the end of the day, I&#8217;m here just here trying to be the best prospect that I can be and impress as many football teams as I can.&#8221;Garrity rewardedFor the second time this offseason, a veteran member of the Lions&#8217; special teams unit got a welcome early morning surprise.Punt returner Gregg Garrity got the news before Thursday&#8217;s workout session that he would be on scholarship for his senior season. Garrity joins long snapper Ty Yazujian, who also got the good news this winter.A wide receiver like his father &#8212; Penn State&#8217;s 1982 Sugar Bowl star of the same name &#8212; Garrity&#8217;s biggest impact has come on special teams. Garrity took over as the Lions&#8217; top punt returner toward the end of the 2015 season after DeAndre Thompkins struggled with ball security.Garrity &#8212; known to friends and family by his nickname, &#8220;Pook&#8221; &#8212; has been a popular figure on the team since joining up as a walk-on for Bill O&#8217;Brien in 2013 and seeing the field as a true freshman.Though his father caught the touchdown that helped secure Penn State&#8217;s first national title, Garrity hasn&#8217;t used his family&#8217;s history as a crutch.&#8220;I didn&#8217;t want my dad&#8217;s legacy to tell who I was as a person or a player,&#8221; the younger Garrity said before the TaxSlayer Bowl last month. &#8220;I just kind of wanted to let my personality and play show on the field.&#8220;I think the guys have set that aside and just judged me as a person, not for what my dad has done.&#8221;Coaches, too.Receivers coach Josh Gattis congratulated Garrity Thursday on Twitter in the form of a checklist.&#8220;Team first.
