RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The leader of a South Dakota congregation of Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect will have to stay behind bars pending trial. Seth Jeffs was arrested last week in a federal sweep accusing sect leaders of food-stamp fraud and money laundering. He had a detention hearing Monday, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann ordered him held without bond. Defense attorney Jeffrey Connolly argued that Jeffs demonstrated in a previous criminal case that he is not a flight risk. Prosecutors say Jeffs is a flight risk and should be kept in custody. Wollman ruled that the government met the burden of proof. Authorities say Jeffs leads a compound of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members in rural Custer County.
