<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Barry Manilow wants the music to continue.</p><p>With that mission at heart, Manilow said Tuesday he will donate a Yamaha piano to launch a local music instrument drive as part of his Manilow Music Project.</p><p>The legendary singer-songwriter hopes others will follow his philanthropic lead when he donates the piano to the Solomon/Plains Jr. High School, part of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District.</p><p>Taking it a step further, Manilow said anyone who donates a &#8220;new or gently used&#8221; musical instrument one week prior to his March 13 Mohegan Sun Arena show date will receive two free tickets (valid for pre-selected seat locations on a first-come/first-served basis).</p><p>&#8220;Schools are running out of instruments,&#8221; Manilow said in a telephone interview Tuesday. &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to get the public to donate instruments that might be gathering dust in their attics or basements.&#8221;</p><p>The Manilow Music Project has conducted music instrument drives all over the country to assist local schools with music programs.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m thrilled to once again bring the gift of music to these kids,&#8221; Manilow said.</p><p>The NBT Bank Box Office at Mohegan Sun Arena will serve as the base for the instrument drive in Wilkes Barre from March 7-12. The instrument drop off location will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.</p><p>Brian Fischer, music educator at Solomon/Plains Jr. High School, said the school is honored and privileged to receive donated instruments from the community and to have Barry Manilow recognize the importance of music education in today&#8217;s society.</p><p>&#8220;What an amazing contribution to our school district and the people it serves,&#8221; Fischer said.</p><p>The Manilow Music Project (MMP) is part of The Manilow Fund for Health and Hope formed as a grass roots organization to assist local charities and programs. Its primary focus is to provide musical instruments to high schools and middle schools and to provide music scholarships at universities throughout the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom.
