<p>In 2011 the Times Leader&#8217;s regional spelling bee champion, 14-year-old Sukanya Roy from Abington Heights Middle School, won the 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Competing against young people from across the country, she spelled such words as <em>rapakivi</em> (that&#8217;s a coarse, red granite); <em>lakatoi</em> (a dugout double canoe), <em>zwischenspiel</em> (a musical interlude) and s<em>angsue</em> (a blood-sucking worm.) The winning word was <em>cymotrichous</em>, which means having wavy hair.</p><p>After winning the national bee, Sukanya appeared on CNN, &#8220;Live! With Regis and Kelly,&#8221; &#8220;Jimmy Kimmel Live &#8221; and met with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office. When she returned to Abington Heights Middle School, she was welcomed with a limousine ride and school assembly in her honor.</p><p>Here she is shown spelling a word at the Times Leader&#8217;s regional bee at the Woodlands, which she won three years in a row.</p><style>
