<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Just this once, Tara Kupsky wasn&#8217;t going to let her older sister Paige get away.</p><p>The Wyoming Seminary sophomore had sights on an epic upset over Paige through the halfway point. Soon after her 100-yard turn, Tara breezed past her elder &#8211; the reigning district champion &#8211; and left her trailing in her wake for a huge three-second victory.</p><p>Tara Kupsky won the 200 yard IM at the District 2 Class 2A swimming championships Friday at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center. She clocked in a 2:09.68 to set a new school record. Paige took second.</p><p>&#8220;Coming into the race, I knew it was going to be pretty close between me and Paige,&#8221; Tara said. &#8220;I&#8217;m just glad I got to race against her. Maybe I&#8217;ll share it with her. It was fun.&#8221;</p><p>Tara Kupsky was one of four Wyoming Valley Conference boys and girls swimmers to bring home a gold medal in the first round of competition. Scranton Prep took first in each of the eight remaining races.</p><p>Despite the Classics&#8217; dominance, Dallas leads the girls&#8217; team standings by 31 with 150 points. Scranton Prep holds onto a slim five-point lead over the Mountaineer boys heading into the final day of competition. The district championships conclude Saturday at noon at the CYC.</p><p>Tunkhannock&#8217;s Jacob Skoronski earned the WVC&#8217;s first gold medal of the day with a 200 free championship in a tight race. The race completely changed face after 150 yards when Scranton Prep freshman Conor McCall, whose father holds the 31-year old record in the event, swam the third leg a full second faster than Skoronski and Holy Redeemer freshman Adam Mahler to lead the race. But something happened, McCall&#8217;s momentum stalled, either from a bad turn or a premature victory celebration, and he picked his head out of water.</p><p>&#8220;I saw him out of the corner of my eye,&#8221; Skoronski said. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t sure if he had a bad turn or he stopped. I just kept going.&#8221;</p><p>Only four-hundreths of a second separated Skoronski and Mahler heading into the final 50 yards. Skoronski said he &#8220;dug down deep and got that bucket of guts going&#8221; to touch the wall 19-hundreths of a second quicker than Mahler to clock in with a 1:49.82 victory.</p><p>Mahler had his turn later in the 100 butterfly. He and Scranton Prep&#8217;s Thomas Pfaeffle were in a virtual tie though 50 yards. Mahler kicked it into fifth gear and breezed by for a 53.45 victory to capture a 69-hundreths of a second advantage over Pfaeffle.</p><p>&#8220;I was nervous going up to the blocks,&#8221; Mahler admitted. &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t as bad in the water. That&#8217;s where I like to be. But, yeah, I hit my turn on the pad well, pushed off and kept swimming it through.&#8221;</p><p>Dallas&#8217; Abby Zolner won her first district championship in the 100 butterfly in a heavily contested race. Facing off against Prep&#8217;s Catherine Donlon and Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s duo of Julia Baur and Nicole Rose Lukesh, Zolner jetted off the starting block and owned more than a half-second lead against the field after the first go-around. Zolner was not intimidated by Donlon&#8217;s creeping butterfly strokes, holding off for a sub-minute finish at 59.01 seconds for first place.</p><p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t have any idea what was going to happen,&#8221; Zolner said. &#8220;I was really scared of Cat Donlon next to me. She was really intimidating. At the end, I was dying. I was so afraid she was going to catch up to me. So I just powered through in my mind.&#8221;</p><p>Scranton Prep knocked down three district records Friday. Peyton McNulty, Audrey Campo, Donlon and Lauren Lanzendorfer not only held off a talented Wyoming Seminary 200-medley team but recorded a new district mark of 1:49.38. Prior to being upset by Zolner, Donlon bid farewell to one of the district&#8217;s longest-standing records, rewriting Abington Heights grad and former Olympic swimmer Sue Heon&#8217;s 1978 record with a 1:54.36 performance. Teammate Nico Lastauskas made mincemeat of the boys 200 IM mark, previously held by Tunkhannock grad Ben Spencer, with a 1:56.26 swim.</p><p>Other WVC swimmers recorded notable performances: Tunkhannock&#8217;s Morgan Manglaviti took second in the 200 free before beating Holy Redeemer&#8217;s Emily Blaum on a touch for third place in the 200-free relay. Redeemer&#8217;s Kayla Kruk dropped six seconds in a fourth-place 200 IM swim. Dallas&#8217; Mikhail Krochta followed teammate Porter Luksic with nearly an eight-second drop in the 200 IM for third. In a battle between two of the fastest sprinters in the commonwealth, Dallas&#8217; Annalise Cheshire came up short to Prep&#8217;s Audrey Campo by 16-hundreths of a second in an outstanding 24.24 second finish in the 50 free.
