Lackawanna County Restaurant inspections: Feb. 29 - March 7

The following are recent Luzerne County restaurant inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. According to the agency: &#8220;any inspection is a &#8216;snapshot&#8217; of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection, violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment. The information is taken from the inspection database at www.eatsafepa.com. Postal addresses used here are as listed on the state&#8217;s website, and may not correspond to the municipalities in the which facilities are physically located.Spencer&#8217;s Western Cafe, 756 Route 118, Sweet Valley, Feb. 29. Regular inspection; out of compliance. Violations: The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Observed a bag of potatoes stored directly on the floor of the walk-in cooler. The potatoes were elevated during inspection. Buildup of grease/grime residue on the inside surfaces of all basins, basin rims and back splash of the three-compartment sink. Observed a buildup of dried food residue and grease on all surfaces of the sink used to rinse dishes/equipment before washing. The hand-wash sink in the kitchen area was blocked by mop/bucket and not accessible at all times for employee use. Mop/bucket moved during this inspection. Raw eggs stored above ready-to-eat foods (tortillas and rolls) located in the walk-in cooler. The eggs were moved to the lower shelf during inspection. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in all refrigeration/freezer units. All interior surfaces of the upper microwave oven, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The microwave was cleaned and sanitized during inspection. Observed a tan yeast-like residue on the inside surface of the soda gun holster at the bar. The holster was cleaned and sanitized during inspection. Observed dried food residue and dust on pizza screens and pizza trays stored on top of the pizza oven. Observed dried food residue on the wire racks, a food contact surface inside of the walk-in cooler. The floor surface of the lower microwave oven, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The microwave was cleaned and sanitized during inspection. The post can opener blade, a food contact surface, was observed to have black food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The can opener was cleaned and sanitized during inspection. Observed an accumulation of dirt/dust and flour on the top surface of the pizza oven (a non food contact surface) located in the kitchen. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability. Last test results available for coliform was dated Oct. 15, 2015 and was negative. The Nitrite/nitrate results dated Aug. 12, 2015 had no issues identified. There were no paper towels at the hand-wash sink located in the kitchen. Paper towels were placed at sink during this inspection.Royal Bakery, 1701 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, March 1. Follow up inspection; in compliance. Violation: Old unused equipment stored in prep area, should be removed from food facility.Taste, 295 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, March 1. Opening inspection; in compliance. Violations: The new facility does not currently have an employee that has a food employee certification. Person in charge provided proof that he is registered to take a 5-year certification course on June 6. He stated that it is a ServSafe certification course. Certificate will be emailed to this inspector or faxed/mailed to the Department&#8217;s Region 3 field office. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the low temperature mechanical ware-wash machine.Wyoming Area Secondary Center, 20 Memorial St., Exeter, March 1. Follow up inspection; in compliance.Campfire Cafe, 2203 Route 118, Hunlock Creek, March 1. Regular inspection; in compliance.Cook&#8217;s Variety Store, Box 22, Lehman, March 1. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: The end caps are missing on the protective cover on florescent lights over prep area. Corrected during inspection.Dollar General #9423, 166 N. Memorial Highway, Back Mountain Shopping Center, Shavertown, March 1. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: The receiving door in storage room at the left rear of the facility, leading to the outside has a gap at the floor/door junction, with visible light, and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. No sign or poster posted at the hand wash sink in the men&#8217;s restroom to remind food employees to wash hands. Sign was placed during inspection.Avenue Diner, 22 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, March 2. Follow up inspection; in compliance. Violation: A large amount of the flooring is missing in front of reach in refrigeration unit located outside the walk-in cooler. The area is approximately 12 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches. There are many cracked/broken/missing floor tiles throughout the kitchen, dish-wash area, and food-prep room. The floor surface is not smooth and easily cleanable. Observed a slight accumulation of dust on the window sills and Venetian blinds in the entry way and front dining area. There is a small accumulation of dust and dirt on the window sills in the large dining room at rear of facility. There were a number of finger prints on the front windows in the front dining area.Brews Brothers, 1705 River Rd., Pittston, March 2. Follow up inspection; in compliance.Chuck E Cheese #533, 2010 Wilkes-Barre Marketplace, Wilkes-Barre Township, March 2. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Working containers for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Containers contents were discarded. Food employees observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets or hats. Observed a buildup of mold-like residue along the lip of the ice machine deflector plate. Deflector plate cleaned. Observed a buildup of syrup residue on surface above and behind dispensing nozzles on self-serve beverage machine. Employee cleaned surfaces. Observed an accumulation of food debris in bottom of container of utensils in prep area. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Observed a buildup of black residue in drain under ware-wash sinks.Hunlock Creek Tavern, 7 Old Tavern Rd., Hunlock Creek, March 2. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Observed a buildup of static dust on the fan guard inside the upright beer cooler at bar. Raw eggs stored above ready-to-eat foods such as cleaned celery, in the reach-in refrigerator in the kitchen. The eggs were moved to the bottom shelf during this inspection. Observed dried food residue on all inside surfaces of the microwave oven. The microwave was cleaned and sanitized during the inspection. Observed a moderate amount of grease and dust on the hood filters over the fryer.Nino&#8217;s Pizza, 162 Route 239 Shickshinny, March 2. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat deli meat, a time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. The meats were dated during this inspection Observed a buildup of black dust on the fan guard inside the two-door True Pepsi cooler in kitchen. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability. Owner will email inspector or fax/mail to the Department&#8217;s Region 3 Office the the most recent water test with in the next 21 days. Person in charge stated that they have the negative results in the office that is not in the facility and stated they are due to test the water this week again. No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sink in the ladies restroom to remind food employees to wash their hands. Sign was placed during this inspection.Skateaway Snack Bar, 610 Blackman St., Wilkes-Barre, March 2. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Employee toilet room does not have a self-closing door. Observed spoon in bulk container of sugar with handle in contact with contents. Spoon was removed. Beverage dispensing nozzles have syrup residue and were not clean to sight and touch. Nozzles cleaned. Observed an accumulation of mold-like residue on the deflector plate in the ice machine. Surfaces cleaned and sanitized. Employees&#8217;s toilet room is not provided with a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins.Tenth Street Elementary School, Tenth Street, Wyoming, March 2. Violation: Both sets of double doors in the dining area of the cafeteria have an approximate 1-inch gap with visible light at the floor/ door junction and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animalsBob Evans #442, 920 Schechter Rd., Wilkes-Barre, March 3. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food in the McCall refrigeration unit by cooking area stored open with no covering. Foods were covered. Observed a buildup of ice on a case of food in the walk-in freezer. Dispensing nozzles on the hot chocolate machine observed with a buildup of food residue. Nozzles were cleaned. Interior of microwave, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Microwave cleaned. Observed an accumulation of food residue on surface above dispensing nozzles on juice machine. Surface was cleaned. Observed a buildup of dust on the fan guards in the McCall refrigeration unit by the cooking area. Observed an accumulation of syrup residue and grime on surface above dispensing nozzles on both soda machine. Surfaces were cleaned. Observed a buildup of grime in the drain under the ware-wash area. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Raw eggs are stored above ready-to-eat foods (rolls) in the refrigerator. Eggs were moved to the bottom shelf during inspection. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety foods (deli meats and cheeses), located in the deli case, and held more than 24 hours, are not being marked with the date it was opened. Food items were date marked during this inspection. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have available current laboratory testing results for water potability. Owner stated he has the reports at his home. Owner will email the reports to this inspector or fax/mail them to the Department&#8217;s Region 3 Field Office.<style>
