Wolf opens door to ‘get some money’ to schools, universities

<p>SELINSGROVE &#8212; A question and answer event with Angela Lansbury Tuesday night at Susquehanna University was more than an evening of entertainment. The hour-long presentation served to both inform and inspire.</p><p>Lansbury did not hesitate to share personal reflections, even those that brought a brief tear to her eye.</p><p>She looked back to 1970, remembering when her California home burned to the ground.</p><p>&#8220;As many of you know, my children were on drugs very badly and I wanted to get out of California; I wanted to get out of the United States,&#8221; she said frankly with a British accent that kept audience members riveted to her offerings.</p><p>She went on to explain she then bought a home in Ireland.</p><p>Laughing, she remembered digging up a flower bed to to plant new blooms.</p><p>Afterward, she realized the bed was filled with perennials, wonderful flowers, which were lost.</p><p>If Lansbury admitted defeat on this small issue, she did not admit anything less than success on almost every other area of her life.</p><p>At 90, she continues to challenge herself, accepting new roles, but doing so selectively.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to play someone dying in bed,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m not doing that.&#8221;</p><p>Her story spans from her original contract with MGM, in which she was never the star, to Tony-winning offerings on Broadway to her role as Jessica Fletcher in the television program &#8220;Murder She Wrote.&#8221;</p><p>Anna Andes, assistant professor of theater at Susquehanna who joined Lansbury on stage, said when she picked Lansbury up at her hotel, she had expected to help her out of the car.</p><p>&#8220;There was no helping her out of the car,&#8221; Andes said. &#8220;She sprang out.&#8221;</p><p>Lansbury stressed that, although she consistently tries to portray strong positive women, she wasn&#8217;t quite a role model &#8212; just an actress doing a job with purpose.</p><p>Of her 12-year run as Jessica Fletcher, Lansbury said once she got involved in production after the show had been on the air five years, she took the character in a new direction, moving her from her original hometown of Cabot Cove to New York City.</p><p>&#8220;There could only be so many murders in Cabot Cove,&#8221; she said. &#8220;At least when she moved, she could be a bit glamorous.&#8221;</p><p>Lansbury also talked about her husband, who passed away about 10 years ago.</p><p>&#8220;I knew he would want me to keep working,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But, I had to wait until I was ready.&#8221;</p><p>The audience that filled Weber Chapel was comprised of students of the school&#8217;s drama program and Lansbury aficionados, from professors to octogenarians.</p><p>As Lansbury exited the stage to a standing ovation, she said, &#8220;I am so grateful and take such joy in looking back on my life.&#8221;</p><style>
