Violence at USP Canaan prompts 80-month sentence, assault charge for pair of attackers

LEWISBURG &#8212; Trying to will her way through the pool, Alexis Ivanitch suddenly lost her stroke.Mainly because she lost her strength.&#8220;I felt good for fly and back,&#8221; Ivanitch said about the first two strokes of the four-part 200 IM. &#8220;I hit breaststroke and I couldn&#8217;t feel my arms at that point.&#8221;Welcome to the grueling world of the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, where athletes competing in multiple events are sometimes faced with a draining dilemma at Bucknell University&#8217;s Kinney Natatorium.Trying to beat the best athletes in the state in a race is difficult enough. Trying to do it in more than one event can be especially energy-sapping.That&#8217;s what happened Wednesday morning to Ivanitch, a Wyoming Valley West junior who was one of three individual athletes from the Wyoming Valley Conference and a member of one of two relay teams failing to make it past the Class 3A morning preliminaries.Ivanitch was part of Valley West&#8217;s girls 200 medley relay team that was disqualified when a relay member jumped early, then came back less than 30 minutes later to compete in the 200 IM.&#8220;I think both were pretty good,&#8221; Ivanitch said. &#8220;I felt good in the relay. But it tired me out for the IM.&#8221;Still, WVC competitors agreed the experience was worth the trip.Valley West junior Stanley Zaneski finished with the most impressive showing, moving up eight spots from his 29th-place seeding to finish 21st overall with a time of 21.85. That didn&#8217;t earn him a spot in the top 16 swimmers who returned for the night competition (only the top eight swimmers from morning preliminaries qualify for the championship meet and the next eight swim in a preceding consolation race at night in each event). But the showing did earn Zaneski high praise from his coach.&#8220;He had a terrible start (in the 50 free) but he had a good swim,&#8221; Wyoming Valley West coach Frank Tribendis said. &#8220;And he dropped his (seed) time. That&#8217;s the biggest thing for each swimmer.&#8221;Zaneski also swam with Zac Rosencrans, Logan Fluegel and Josh Zawatski on the Class 3A boys 200 medley relay team that finished 23rd with a preliminary run of 1:39. Hazleton Area&#8217;s Jorge Moncayo rounded out the WVC&#8217;s representation on the first day of Class 3A action by finishing 32nd in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.41.That&#8217;s the same event consisting of a 50-yard butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle where Ivanitch finished 30th in 2:17.89. That performance bumped her up a slot from her No. 31 seed entering the preliminaries, but left her spirits a little down.&#8220;I&#8217;m not happy with my swim. But it&#8217;s states and I had fun,&#8221; said Ivanitch, who also competed in the Class 3A state finals in the 200 IM as a sophomore last season. &#8220;Last year, I was more excited to just be here. I wasn&#8217;t really worried about how I swim. This year, I was more focused on my swimming. It was just a better experience.&#8221;Her coach said that finish is nothing to frown about.&#8220;She&#8217;s right at her better (performances),&#8221; Tribendis said. &#8220;If you look at all the girls, Triple-A is extremely fast. The biggest thing is, our strong meets are (Thursday). We&#8217;ll see how we do.&#8221;And for some WVC swimmers, the state waters presented a perfect opportunity for them to see what it takes to raise their performance level.&#8220;I like to actually watch them,&#8221; Ivanitch was of other competitors from different parts of Pennsylvania, &#8220;and see what they&#8217;re doing that I&#8217;m not, and learn more about what they&#8217;re doing. And that&#8217;s what I did.&#8221;<style>
