After 30 years of promoting the sport of baseball in the region, the Moosic Mets organization is shutting down for the 2016 season and possibly beyond.Moosic Mets founder, Harry Nelson is retiring from a program that started in 1985.&#8220;It&#8217;s been an honor for 30 years,&#8221; Nelson said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve served my purpose right now. We&#8217;ve had kids drafted from out of here. Have twenty-plus kids in professional baseball, but it&#8217;s caught up with me now.BASEBALLKing&#8217;s 18, PS-WS 0King&#8217;s College baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning and used five pitchers to shutout visiting Penn State Worthington Scranton 18-0 in a darkness shortened game on Thursday afternoon at Lipo Field in Wilkes-Barre. The game was called after the Lions batted in the seventh inning when the umpires ruled it was too dark to continue playing.The Monarchs, who are outscoring opponents 26-5 in the first inning this season, improved to 9-3. The Lions fell to 0-5.Jason Nobrega started on the mound for the Monarchs and recorded his first collegiate win in his collegiate debut. He pitched the first two innings recording three strikeouts and allowing just one hit and one walk. John Wickiser pitched the next two innings for the Monarchs allowing just one hit and striking out two.Connor Agnew pitched the fifth allowing two hits and walking one but pitched out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the shutout. Chris Lupole pitched a perfect sixth with one strikeout and Kyle Marinelli made his collegiate debut with a perfect seventh.Tom Gibbons led the Monarchs with three hits in three at-bats with two walks, five RBIs, and four runs scored. Sean Padden had three hits and drove in four runs while Bruce Breithaupt also had three hits and knocked in three. Chris Rebar and Brad Wilkins had two hits and two RBIs each. Rebar also scored three runs while Wilkins and Christian Pack scored twice. As a team the Monarchs scored 18 runs on 17 hits and drew seven walks. This is the sixth time this year King&#8217;s has scored 10-plus runs in a game.SOFTBALLKing&#8217;s splits DH vs. LycomingKing&#8217;s split a doubleheader at Lycoming College Thursday in Williamsport. King&#8217;s won the first game 4-3 before dropping the nightcap 13-7.King&#8217;s now stands at 7-7 while Lycoming is 9-2.In the opener Shelby Eby was 1-for-4 with a two-run triple while Kelcie Senchak was 2-for-4. Alizabeth Ellsworth was 1-for-2 with one run scored while Nicole Turner finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Rachel Linso picked up the win, scattering five hits in the game.In the second game Samantha Bloom was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs while Senchak was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Amy Kowalczyk finished 2-for-2 with two RBI while Shelby Eby was 2-for-3 with a two-run double. Ellsworth, Zina Knight, and Brittany McNair each added two hits for the Monarchs.WOMEN&#8217;S LACROSSEWilkes 13, Smith 10Wilkes held off a furious comeback attempt by Smith College on Thursday evening to earn a 13-10 victory at Schmidt Stadium.The Lady Colonels are now 5-0 on the year, the team&#8217;s best start since a 9-0 start in 2014.The Lady Colonels were led by Madeleine Brownsey, who scored five goals. Tori Kerr finished with three goals, while The Maura Brownsey and Kyra Boccio had two assists each. Freshman Tabitha Gravius recorded six saves to earn her fifth win of the season.MEN&#8217;S ICE HOCKEYPenn State 5, Wisconsin 2ST. PAUL, Minn. &#8211; Third-seeded Penn State bounced sixth-seeded Wisconsin, 5-2, in the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday evening at Xcel Energy Center.Eric Scheid scored twice and Luke Juha had a career-high three assists and a plus-three rating to lead the Nittany Lions.Penn State (21-12-4) snapped a three-game winning streak by scoring twice late in the first period. The lead grew to 4-1 after two periods and an empty netter provided the final score line. Eamon McAdam earned his 13th win by making 35 saves.The Nittany Lions move on to play second-seeded Michigan at Xcel Energy Center on Friday at 5 p.m. ET. That game will be shown live on Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.Joining Scheid and Juha with their multi-point games were David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) with a pair of assists, Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) on a goal and an assist and Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) who matched DeRosa&#8217;s line. Scheid now has a team-leading seven goals against the Badgers.The Nittany Lions opened the scoring with 7:55 remaining when Juha lifted a puck over the Wisconsin (8-19-8) defense to a rushing Scheid who skated in alone and scored his 12th of the year.Penn State doubled the lead four minutes later when Connor Varley (Lansdale, Pa.) had his shot from the left point deflect off a Badger stick and get past Matt Jurusik (24 saves) for his first goal since Dec. 29, 2015 vs. Clarkson.
