U.S. Marshals Service arrests Plymouth sexual assault suspect in Taylor

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; Cheers, a lot of smiles and tears highlighted &#8220;Match Day&#8221; at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) Friday afternoon.</p><p>Sixty-seven of the college&#8217;s medical students learned their residency placements through the National Resident Matching Program, which occurred simultaneously at colleges across the nation.</p><p>The fourth-year students were given cards that corresponded with a lantern in the lobby from which they pulled a card listing their future destinations. Members of the group will spend the next three to seven years training in their specialties, beginning July 1.</p><p>Clarks Summit native Brianna Shinn, who cultivated a love for science and medicine during high school at Abington Heights and undergraduate studies at Cedarville University in Ohio, was overcome with joy when she matched with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, her first choice.</p><p>&#8220;I dropped my card and I just started bawling,&#8221; Shinn said. &#8220;It&#8217;s been 15 minutes and I&#8217;m still crying a little bit. I feel incredibly blessed. Throughout my experiences in college, I knew medicine was not just what I wanted to do; it was my calling.</p><p>&#8220;The staff and faculty at TCMC are unbelievable,&#8221; Shinn continued. &#8220;Our clinical years changed my life. The doctors in this community who taught us are so passionate about this medical school and that really impacts us as students.&#8221;</p><p>Shinn also credits the camaraderie throughout the entire class for playing a big role in her success at the college.</p><p>&#8220;My classmates are unbelievably supportive,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Our class, as a whole, is so close and you could see it today through our reactions for each other. It&#8217;s overwhelming. There is something about going through those four years together that really bonds you.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Match Day&#8221; was also very memorable for Rachel Brutico-Giannotti, of Clarks Summit, after learning she would serve her residency at the same hospital as her husband, Vincent, whom she met in medical school.</p><p>Rachel will specialize in pediatrics at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, their first choice, while Vincent will specialize in emergency medicine.</p><p>&#8220;I enjoy helping people and I&#8217;ve always had an interest in the science of medicine,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m going into pediatrics because I love kids and being around them. It&#8217;s a perfect fit.&#8221;</p><p>Brutico-Giannotti, a Scranton Prep and Penn State graduate, looks forward to helping and healing children.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m from a big family,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m the second oldest of seven children, so I love being around kids. I also find the diseases that affect children very interesting and I really like the preventative aspect of it. You have such an impact on them at such a young age.&#8221;</p><p>According to Brutico-Giannotti, some of the lessons learned at TCMC will help her in all aspects of life.</p><p>&#8220;This school has taught me so much about what I&#8217;m capable of doing and to never give up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It showed me even though you may struggle along the way, you have to keep fighting for your goals.&#8221;</p><p>TCMC President and Dean Dr. Steven J. Scheinman expressed his pride for the college and its graduating students following the ceremony.</p><p>&#8220;This is always the most exciting day of the year,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is the first class that I, as dean, took through all four years. They have been a wonderful class and have always supported each other. There are a lot of remarkable young leaders in this class.</p><p>&#8220;They don&#8217;t just have the scientific smarts; they also all have the people skills that really make the difference in an excellent doctor.&#8221;</p><style>
