After World War II, the United States gave Japan control over the Diaoyu Islands. The islands are located between China and Japan and remain a contentious point between these two nations. Starting with these islands, China is flexing its muscles in the region, looking outward and establishing itself as a world power.Despite Joe Sestak&#8217;s military background, he approaches these complex issues as though he was a diplomat. He clearly can negotiate between military persuasion and diplomatic force. His smart power works perfectly for dealing with China. When reacting to Chinese posturing in the region, 15 years ago Sestak called for an additional aircraft carrier in the Asia Pacific, affirming America&#8217;s commitment to stability.Joe Sestak spoke in Wilkes-Barre along the Senate campaign trail. This tour is to present his foreign policy plan. When China escalates by building artificial islands for a military base in the South China Sea, Sestak&#8217;s advice 15 years ago when he was a one-star admiral clearly should have been followed.Now &#8211; as a retired three-star admiral &#8211; we should listen. That is why I am voting for Joe Sestak. He understands the importance of the region, in which almost $5 trillion in trade traverses the South China Sea, much of it headed to and from the United States. It is in our economic interest to stabilize the region and elect Sestak to lead that charge.Joe Sestak helped to develop many comprehensive strategies to build a stronger America. His three decades of serving our country cannot go unnoticed. I humbly urge all Pennsylvanians to elect Joe Sestak to the U.S. Senate.
