Increasingly, women from all walks of life in our community find themselves dealing with opiate dependency.The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pregnant women taking methadone/Subutex/Suboxone as a treatment for opiate drug dependency be encouraged to breast-feed their babies. With continued treatment and support, infants born to these mothers can benefit from breast-feeding.Studies have shown that babies born to mothers on methadone/Suboxone/Subutex who breast-feed have shorter hospital stays and have a lower likelihood of needing medications; withdrawal symptoms are minimized in these breast-fed newborns.If a mother is actively using illicit drugs, then breast-feeding is inadvisable.The Luzerne County Breastfeeding Coalition welcomes pregnant women to contact us for more information by calling 570-808-5534 or sending email to this address: lcbfcoalition@gmail.com.Karen L.
