Hopkins, Planutis duo sparks Team White win

Grow helps Tunkhannock to high school boys lacrosse victory over North Pocono

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8211; Chris Parker had a rare advantage for a high school basketball all-star game coach &#8211; the ability to put five of his own players from a district championship and state quarterfinalist team together on their home floor one last time.</p><p>Parker used that advantage, particularly when it came time to protect a lead in the final 4:22 of the girls opener of the Dr. George P. Moses Wyoming Valley Conference Senior All-Star Classic doubleheader.</p><p>It was the contribution of two Hanover Area teammates, however, that helped give the Royals a lead to protect for their coach as Team Parker defeated Team Gavio, 60-50, at Holy Redeemer High School.</p><p>Haylee Bobos earned team Most Valuable Player honors with nine points and Hanover Area teammate Asdone Hooper added seven points and a game-high three steals in the win.</p><p>Taylor Montana from Berwick had 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots to earn MVP honors for the losing team, which was coached by Hazleton Area&#8217;s Joe Gavio.</p><p>&#8220;We definitely wanted to win as a team,&#8221; Bobos said. &#8220;And, I know I definitely wanted to come out and win and enjoy my last game.&#8221;</p><p>Part of that enjoyment came from hitting her only 3-point attempt, answering a 3-pointer by another infrequent long-range bomber, GAR&#8217;s Marie Skrepenak, to bring Team Gavio within five early in the fourth quarter.</p><p>&#8220;I made maybe three 3s in my career,&#8221; Bobos said. &#8220;It was great to be able to hit one.&#8221;</p><p>Bobos, who plans to play college softball on the NCAA Division II level, hit four of seven shots total in the game.</p><p>Team Parker made its first three shots &#8211; an inside move by Rebecca Prociak and a 3-pointer by Holy Redeemer teammate Lydia Lawson before a 15-footer from the left baseline by Bobos &#8211; to score the game&#8217;s first seven points.</p><p>With the two teams rotating a total of 31 players, that lead never went away.</p><p>Team Gavio cut a 15-5 deficit after one quarter to 24-20 on a 3-pointer by GAR&#8217;s Lindsay Quinn with 1:25 left in the half.</p><p>Nikki Wren from Dallas converted a rebound to make it 26-20 at the half, then Bobos and Hooper scored the first two baskets of the second half to again build a 10-point lead.</p><p>Team Gavio put together its best stretch of the game, a 10-1 run in which Montana took over, blocking three shots in two possessions, then powering her way inside for a basket that made it 31-30 with 4:15 left in the third.</p><p>&#8220;In the season, I just like to wait for them to go up and swat it,&#8221; Montana said. &#8220;It felt just like I was playing for Berwick.&#8221;</p><p>Montana drained all five of her shots.</p><p>&#8220;We had some plays that we put in that were designed to get (Crestwood&#8217;s) Maddie Ritsick and I, and a couple of other post players, involved,&#8221; Montana said.</p><p>The Pittston Area combination of Marley O&#8217;Brien and Jamie Chisdock helped Team Parker regain control.</p><p>O&#8217;Brien had two baskets and Chisdock, the Defensive Player of the Game award winner, made a steal to set up a Lawson layup, allowing Team Parker to score the last 10 points of the third quarter and take the game&#8217;s biggest lead, 41-30.</p><p>&#8220;I knew there were a lot of offensive scorers in the game,&#8221; Chisdock said. &#8220;I was more of a defensive player so I just tried to do what I did during the season.&#8221;</p><p>Skrepenak had seven points in the fourth quarter to match Montana for the game-high of 10.</p><p>O&#8217;Brien led rebounders with seven.
