<p>Life in a small town in northern Minnesota is dominated by two things: ice hockey and walleye fishing. Adam Krause did both, and when it comes to hockey nothing is bigger than the high school games. State championships in Minnesota regularly draw more than 20,000 fans and rivalries between the northern and southern parts of the state have grown.</p><p>That rivalry is what link&#8217;s Krause to a former Penguin, who was a hockey hero in Minnesota but a &#8220;villain&#8221; when his team played in the northern part of the state.</p><p><strong>Player:</strong> Adam Krause</p><p><strong>Hometown:</strong> Hermantown, Minnesota</p><p><strong>Type:</strong> Small town</p><p><strong>Population: </strong>9,414</p><p><strong>Distance from Wilkes-Barre: </strong>1,157 miles</p><p><strong>How big is high school hockey in Minnesota? </strong>&#8220;High school hockey is by far the biggest. It&#8217;s a pretty big tradition with our team - they won the state championship this year after getting second six years in a row. I started it my senior year in 2010 and this year, they broke it with a state championship. The state championship gets about 22,000 people. It&#8217;s pretty crazy with small towns drawing big crowds. It&#8217;s huge in Minnesota.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguin Jeff Taffe won the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award in 1999. Is he pretty popular in the state?</strong> &#8220;He&#8217;s from the (Twin Cities). I&#8217;m more from the northern part of Minnesota. He was a Gopher (University of Minnesota) so he was on the wrong side of the tracks from us. It&#8217;s kind of our rivalry - North versus South. I remember growing up when he came to play against the (University of Minnesota Duluth) Bulldogs. He was a good player.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What was it like to play college hockey at Duluth, which is close to your hometown?</strong> &#8220;It was the only team I knew. We didn&#8217;t have the Wild when I was growing up. The Bulldogs was the only team I watched and when I got a chance to commit there I jumped right on it.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What did you do for fun aside from hockey?</strong> &#8220;Hermantown is right on the tip of Lake Superior - the largest freshwater lake in the world. It&#8217;s a beautiful place with a lot of outdoors stuff. It gets very cold in the winter, but the three to four months in the summer there&#8217;s no better place. I have a cabin up in International Falls, way north. We spend most every weekend in the summer there fishing. Rainy Lake is one of the best walleye lakes in the world. It&#8217;s a big thing up there. It&#8217;s something we do a lot.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Are there any similarities between Wilkes-Barre and Hermantown?</strong> &#8220;It seems like a blue collar city -same as there. It&#8217;s a little bit different here in the east than back in Minnesota. Things here are closer together and faster. The houses are attached to each other. In Minnesota everyone has acres of land and its way more spread out. A lot more dirt roads.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Would you like to move back to Minnesota one day?</strong> &#8220;I live in Duluth in the summer. After hockey I&#8217;d like to stay in Minnesota. There&#8217;s a lot of opportunities in Minneapolis. We&#8217;ll see where hockey takes me first.&#8221;</p><style>
