PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man jailed on federal heroin and weapons charges is now also charged with killing a Pittsburgh woman and wounding her mother because the younger woman was cooperating with authorities in a related money laundering investigation, authorities said Monday. U.S. Attorney David Hickton in Pittsburgh called a news conference to discuss the new charges against Price Montgomery, 35. One of his attorneys declined comment Monday. Montgomery was charged in Ohio last year with soliciting a fellow inmate at a Youngstown jail to shoot two other unnamed witnesses against him in the alleged drug and money laundering operation. Montgomery was bringing heroin to the Pittsburgh area from New Jersey, authorities have said in the related drug indictment. Now authorities have named Montgomery as a shooter who killed Tina Crawford and wounded her mother, Patsy Crawford, as they left home for a meeting Tina Crawford had with state and federal drug agents in August 2014. Montgomery has not been charged with homicide. Instead, he's charged with federal crimes including tampering with a witness by killing a person — Tina Crawford — which carries life in prison upon conviction. The superseding indictment announced Monday also charges him with tampering with a witness by attempting to kill a person, Patsy Crawford, and weapons offenses. According to authorities in Cleveland, Montgomery was recorded trying to solicit or persuade a fellow inmate at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center and another person, neither identified by name, to kill two other unnamed witnesses. In documents filed with the solicitation charges, federal prosecutors also mentioned the Aug. 22, 2014, shooting of the Crawfords. Crawford and her mother were struck by a hail of bullets as they prepared to leave their garage to speak with authorities about the Montgomery investigation, the court documents said. Twenty-nine shots were fired at Crawford and her mother, who was preparing to drive Tina Crawford to the meeting with authorities. Patsy Crawford was seriously wounded but survived, but Tina Crawford, who was shot 10 times, died, the affidavit said. Although Montgomery was not charged with killing Crawford at that time, the information was included in the federal affidavit because Montgomery shared details about the Crawford shooting with the Ohio inmate he tried to solicit to kill the other witnesses, authorities said. Among other things, Montgomery told the inmate he dropped his cellphone during the Crawford shooting and that investigators traced the phone to Montgomery and found his DNA on it.
