Brandon Matthews got off to a slow start &#8211; for him &#8211; this spring with the Temple University men&#8217;s golf team.The Pittston Area grad kicked off the season by tying for 34th with a 220 total on rounds of 74, 72 and 74 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate March 20-22 in Williamsburg, Va. Then, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior opened with a 75 at the Furman Intercollegiate (March 25-27) in Greenville, S.C. before finding his groove with a pair of 68s to finish tied for 10th with a 211 total.&#8220;It was nice to see Brandon back in form,&#8221; Temple coach Brian Quinn told the media after the tourney. &#8220;We are looking for some big things coming down the stretch for him and the team.&#8221;The All-American has captured eight individual titles since joining the Owls, which ties the school record. He almost broke the tie when he posted a 68-72&#8212;140 to tie for low score at last weekend&#8217;s Cornell Spring South Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He lost medalist honors on the third playoff hole.Temple will compete in the Princeton Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Springdale, N.J., the final prep before the American Athletic Conference Championship May 1 to 3 in Le Canto, Fla.Perfect start for HawywardSt. Joseph&#8217;s senior Dannah Hayward captured the 400-meter hurdles at the 51st Colonial Relays last Saturday in Williamsburg, Va. The Coughlin grad topped a field of 78 competitors with a season-best time of 1:01.32. It was Hayward&#8217;s second straight 400-meter victory to start the season. She finished first in the Monmouth Season Opener on March 30 with a time of 1:02.91.Last Saturday&#8217;s time bettered her ECAC qualifying time and beat her time in last year&#8217;s Colonial Relays when she finished second in 1:01.97.Freshman Nataniela Bourdeau, another Coughlin grad, helped the Hawks finish 19th out of 44 teams by finishing 11th in a field of 106 in the 200-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying performance &#8211; a collegiate best time for her of 24.74.Big weekend for RomeWilliam &amp; Mary sophomore All-American Regan Rome enjoyed running in the annual Colonial Relays. The Dallas High grad ran the anchor leg on the winning the 4x1500 relay last Saturday. The Tribe captured the event with a time of 18.25.32. That was the fourth fastest time in school history. The last time a William &amp; Mary unit went faster was in 2004.On Friday, Rome did the job individually when she captured the 5,000-meter run in a field of 49 runners with a time of 16:12.82. The time qualified her for the ECAC Championship and tied the 13th fastest race in school history and moves her up to seventh all-time on the Tribe leaderboard.Kozloski honored againFranklin &amp; Marshall junior Ryan Kozloski was named the Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week on Monday after a pair of victories at the Little Three Meet last Saturday in Gettysburg. It was the second honor of the season for the Dallas High grad.Kozlowski captured the javelin in 167-06 and the triple jump in 40-09 &#189; at Gettysburg. He also finished fifth in the long jump in 17-01 &#189;.Despite his performance, the Diplomats finished third behind champ Dickinson and Gettysburg in the team standings.Gymnasts come closeMichigan State junior Elena Lagoski and West Virginia freshman Kirah Koshinski had solid performances at the NCAA Regional Gymnastics competition last weekend but both failed to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.Lagoski, a Wyoming Valley West grad, competed in the Georgia Regionals in Athens. She finished third on floor with a 9.925 and also had scores of 9.775 on bars and 9.700 on vault.Koshinski, a Berwick Area grad, finished tied for second on the vault (9.875), tied for sixth on floor (9.85) and 20th on beam (9.70) at the Alabama Regionals in Tuscaloosa, the event drawing a crowd of 10,116.The format called for the top two teams and top two individual outside of the top two teams advancing to the NCAAs, but at the end just the winners of each event moved on.Coffin makes debut Junior Hannah Coffin made her first start of the season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Alabama-Birmingham women&#8217;s track team at the Stanford Invitational last Saturday in Stanford, Calif.The Crestwood grad, competing against some of the top track stars on the West Coast, finished 16th with a time of 10:47.11. The time was important because it currently places her 38th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor qualifying list. The top 48 in each event automatically qualify for the East Regionals May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Fla.Mulhern selectedMisericordia sophomore Zach Mulhern was named MAC Freedom Golfer of the Week on Monday. The Wyoming Area grad earned the award by taking medalist honors in a dual match against King&#8217;s last week. He shot a 74 but it wasn&#8217;t enough as the Monarchs topped the Cougars 321-335 at the Irem Temple Country Club. Sophomore Tyler McGarry, a Pittston Area grad, had an 83 for Misericordia.King&#8217;s was paced by Ryan Crossin of Holy Redeemer who shot an 80 and Coughlin grad, Shamus Gartley, who had an 81.Gavin&#8217;s coming onFreshman Kelley Gavin has played in all nine games and started seven for the 5-4 Moravian women&#8217;s lacrosse team. Gavin, from Shavertown (Wyoming Seminary), is 5-3 and has given up 72 goals and has 60 saves. But in three of her latest games, she&#8217;s held foes under eight goals &#8211; a 17-5 victory over Gwynedd Mercy, an 18-5 triumph over Delaware Valley and a 21-8 victory over Lancaster Bible.Gavin was the winner in last Saturday&#8217;s 24-13 victory over Eastern but she held the Eagles to just four goals in the second half.McClain in reliefJunior Josh McClain has pitched in 12 games out of the bull pen for the 16-9 West Chester baseball team. The 6-4, 200-pound right-hander, a Tunkhannock Area grad, hasn&#8217;t picked up a decision but he has two saves. In 19.2 innings, he&#8217;s given up 24 hits and 11 runs, eight earned, with five walks and 17 strikeouts. His saves came against Philadelphia (8-7) and Pace (5-3).Trio helping GiantsJuniors Antoinette Scialpi and Sarah Stacey and sophomore Ryleigh Fitch are starting for the Keystone softball team which is 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.Scialpi, a Pittston Area grad is hitting .282 (11 for 39), Stacey of Lake-Lehman H.S. is hitting .265 (9 for 34) and Fitch, a Tunkhannock Area grad is batting .391 (9 for 23). Stacey hit a home run in a loss to Misericordia last week.Makowski in action Monmouth sophomore Chase Makowski competed as an individual in the Lehigh Valley Invitational last weekend in Hellertown. Battling high winds during the first round and rain during the second round, the Holy Redeemer grad shot rounds of 80 and 81 for a 161 total.Monmouth finished fifth out of 19 teams in the event.Varela receives honorPenn State Hazleton Freshman and Hazleton Area grad, Samantha Varela was named national player of the week by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association for her performance against SUNY Delhi last weekend.Varela recorded three home runs and 10 RBI on the afternoon. In game one, she hit a three-run home run in the first inning, then followed up with a two-run blast in the second frame. Varela wasn&#8217;t finished, notching an RBI single in the third inning, finishing game one 3 for 3 at the plate with six RBI and two runs scored, leading Hazleton to a 13-0 victory.In game two, Varela came to the plate in the first inning with the bases loaded and delivered her first career grand slam. The home run provided Hazleton all the runs the Lady Lions would need to earn the two game sweep over the Broncos, taking the final game by a score of 4-2.<style>
