PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two transit workers have gone on trial in western Pennsylvania on charges of driving empty buses so recklessly side-by-side that they scraped together just before one crashed. Prosecutors in Allegheny County allege that 47-year-old Juliann Maier and 57-year-old Thomas Frauens were "racing" 65 mph in a 55 mph zone on Interstate 279 before Maier's bus went down an embankment in September 2014. Maier's attorney, Joel Sansone, said Monday that his client had a 28-year safe driving record and her bus had a history of mechanical problems. Maier has filed suit challenging the Port Authority's decision to fire her. Frauens' attorney, Bruce Carsia, said his client wasn't aware of the buses coming into contact and didn't report the accident because he saw others at the scene and heard emergency vehicles approaching.
