Democrats join 3rd televised Senate debate as primary nears

The pace of spending is picking up as Pennsylvania's three Democratic primary candidates for U.S. Senate join their third televised debate in a week. Tuesday night's debate in Lancaster between John Fetterman, Katie McGinty and Joe Sestak comes two weeks before the April 26 election to determine the party's challenger to Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey. Fetterman is the three-term mayor of Braddock, an impoverished steel town near Pittsburgh. Sestak is a retired Navy rear admiral and former two-term congressman from suburban Philadelphia. McGinty has held high-level posts in state and federal government. Total spending in the Democratic primary campaign will likely pass $9 million, mostly for TV ads. Sestak is leading polls. The debate, being broadcast live by WGAL-TV in Lancaster, is sponsored with the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin and Marshall College.
