H.S. Baseball: Comets beat reigning WVC king Wyoming Valley West

MOOSIC &#8212; An impressive streak came to an end, while another stretch continued on Friday night for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at PNC Field.The RailRiders saw their winning streak reach five straight games with a 5-3 win over Syracuse, but their pitchers&#8217; scoreless innings streak concluded after 28 1/3 innings. SWB also remained unbeaten at 2-0 while wearing the Glow in the Park neon green and black uniforms.&#8220;It&#8217;s always fun to play the game the right way and you always play to win when you do that,&#8221; SWB manager Al Pedrique said. &#8220;And I think that&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve done early this year. We&#8217;re executing the little things. The pitching has been great. The starters are keeping us in the game and the bullpen is coming in and shutting the game (down).&#8221;The scoreless streak halted in the top of the first when Syracuse scored twice with one out off Anthony Swarzak, as Matt Skole doubled in Trea Turner and Scott Sizemore for a quick 2-0 lead.Getting in an early hole never seems to bother the RailRiders, and it certainly didn&#8217;t on Friday night.&#8220;We knew we had to score at some point,&#8221; outfielder Aaron Judge. &#8220;We don&#8217;t care if it&#8217;s 0-0 when we come up to hit or down 3-0, 2-0, it doesn&#8217;t matter. We&#8217;re gonna go out there and hit and do our job and we&#8217;re gonna win ball games.&#8221;Judge got the offense going in the bottom of the first with his first homer of the season to get a run back for the RailRiders. He smoked a 3-2 breaking pitch from Paola Espino and lined it to the opposite field a few rows back to pull SWB within 2-1.An RBI-double by Pete Kozma in the fifth inning tied the score at 2-2.Then the biggest jolt to the offense came from Nick Swisher, who played in his second game with the team. The veteran came up big in the sixth inning to put SWB in front.Playing as designated hitter, he clubbed a go-ahead RBI-double with two outs to drive in Judge, then scored an insurance run hustling home from second on a bloop single to right by Donovan Solano as the RailRiders went ahead 4-2. Judge, Swisher and Solano all had two hits and an RBI as the team pounded out 10 hits.Swisher showed he still has some life in his legs, as he dove headfirst into second and home in the frame.&#8220;You gotta love him. I&#8217;ve watched Swisher for a few years now, and just the passion and intensity that he brings to every game, the love that he has for the game is unbelievable,&#8221; Judge said. &#8220;He&#8217;s giving us a spark right now. He&#8217;s acting like he&#8217;s 21-years-old right now.&#8220;He&#8217;s a big part of this team. We&#8217;re so glad and lucky to have him back,&#8221; Judge said. &#8220;We just gotta keep that rolling.&#8221;Hustle from Ben Gamel, who always seems to give a high effort, got the RailRiders another run in the seventh. With two outs, he singled and moved to second on a single by Aaron Judge. When Rob Refsnyder hit a slow grounder to the right side of the infield and beat it out, Gamel sped around third and beat the throw home for a 5-2 lead.On the mound, Swarzak he didn&#8217;t give up anything else in his five innings after allowing Syracuse&#8217;s two runs in the first. Diego Moreno worked two scoreless frames, and James Pazos tossed 1 2/3 innings before a baserunner he allowed in the ninth came around to score with Connor Mullee pitching. Mullee got the last out of the ninth for his first Triple-A save.RailRiders pitchers struck out at least 10 batters for the fifth time in eight games this season.
