Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins get a taste of playoff opponent, Providence Bruins

Six Wyoming Valley Conference players were listed as top high school football prospects for the class of 2017 by the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association (PSFCA) in conjunction with the Big 33 Classic.Earning the honors were Crestwood quarterback/defensive back Lance Blass, Wyoming Valley West running back Sean Judge, Williamsport running back/defensive lineman Ross Stebbins, Dallas lineman Michael Farrell, Berwick lineman Kyle Pierce and Coughlin lineman Ryan Solt.All but Stebbins and Farrell were Times Leader All-WVC first-team selection in 2015. Stebbins and Farrell made the All-WVC second team.The Lackawanna Conference had three players on the list of 105 players &#8212; Abington Heights kicker Colin McCreary, Abington Heights lineman Logan Hivner and Wallenpaupack lineman Zachary Rode.The list consists of rising seniors from across the state and represents a cooperative effort on the part of representatives from PSFCA &#8212; district directors, coaches and other functions of the association. It is the only list of its kind to be compiled exclusively by high school coaches.&#8220;This year&#8217;s list reflects balance in every position, reinforcing that Pennsylvania consistently turns out quality student athletes who are solid college prospects,&#8221; said PSFCA member and Philadelphia area coach Mark Schmidt. &#8220;We look forward to seeing them excel both on and off the field in the coming year.&#8221;BOYS LACROSSECrestwood 16, Danville 4Senior Ryan Magin led the scoring with four goals followed by Justin McCloskey with three as the Comets improved to 5-2 overall with a non-conference win over visiting Danville.Seniors Conner Keenan, Johnny Macri, Seamus Rother and Connor Sheloski paced the defense.GIRLS LACROSSEDanville 14, Crestwood 0The Comets were limited to nine shots on goal in a non-conference loss to Danville.Lake-Lehman 15, Mifflinburg 5Hallie Jenkins and Kate Roberts scored three goals each as the Black Knights defeated Mifflinburg in nonconference play.Jes Evans finished with two goals and two assists, while Katie Strohl had two goals and one assists and Julia Hutsck chipped in with two goals in the win.Mid-West 10, Lake-Lehman 6Katie Strohl scored three goals in Lake-Lehman&#8217;s loss to Mid-West.H.S. TRACK AND FIELDThe Lake-Lehman girls 3,200-meter relay team of Olivia Vasey, Jace Garnick, Jade Fry and Hailey Kubiski set a new school record Saturday at the New York Relays. The girls ran a time of 9:42.23 beating the previous record of 9:43 from 2007.On the boys side, Dominic Hockenbury set a new school record at 1,600 meters. Hockenbury ran 4:15.23 topping Giro Hall&#8217;s record of 4:16 set in 1982.SOFTBALLMMI Prep 19, Lincoln Leadership 44 inn.Lauryn Banyas, Gabby Kupsho and Dana Carrato had two hits a piece in the Preppers nonconference win.MMI Prep had 13 hits.COLLEGE BASEBALLMisericordia sweeps DelValThe Cougars used a 20-hit attack to take the opener 24-2 and rode the left arm of Zach Mason to win the nightcap 4-0.In the opener, Brian Eshleman hit a grand slam and Jeremy DeCotiis had three hits and two RBI.In the nightcap, Mason struck out seven in the complete-game victory. Mike Comerford had three hits and Jeremy DeCotiis had two hits and two RBI.WOMEN&#8217;S SOFTBALLWilkes drops doubleheaderWilkes dropped a pair of games at No. 23 Manhattanville, falling 8-0 in five innings in game one before dropping a 13-0 decision in five innings.Lacey Bixler managed two of Wilkes&#8217; six hits over the doubleheader.Misericordia sweeps twinbillBailee Schies scattered four hits across nine innings to get a 1-0 win in game one for Misericordia. Abby Marzzacco was 2 four 4 while Whitney Ellenberg was 1-4 with a triple and the winning run. She scored on a wild pitch.Maddie Stebich picked up an 11-2 win in game two, allowing seven hits through five innings.Melissa Parker had a day at the plate, going 3-4 with two home runs and six RBI.WOMEN&#8217;S LACROSSEMisericordia 17, Delaware Valley 5Erin Baker had four goals and an assist and Ashley Hobbs scored three goals as the Cougars improved to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Freedom.Wilkes 20, King&#8217;s 13Jessyca Held led Wilkes with seven goals while Toni Kerr added six and Madeleine Brownsey five.Gabriella Morrocu paced King&#8217;s with three goals and five assists while Juliette Mortimer had three goals and three assists.MEN&#8217;S LACROSSEManhattanville 12, Wilkes 5Matthew Bush led Wilkes with two goals and a team-high seven ground balls. Brian Manning made 16 saves in net as the Colonels fell to 0-11 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.Eastern 12, Misericordia 5Phil Fraher scored two goals and Kyle Reese had a goal and an assist as Misericordia lost on the road.WOMEN&#8217;S TENNISMisericordia 6, FDU-Florham 3Linsey Parks and Amberlynn Habich were both double-winners as Misericordia defeated FDU-Florham.
