<p>This year&#8217;s Penguins team has players from all over the globe - Germany, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and western Canada. They come from big cities like Toronto, New England coastal towns and hockey hotbeds in Minnesota and Michigan. But one hails from right here in northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><p>Patrick McGrath is the first locally-born player to suit up for the Penguins. His hometown of Shavertown is familiar to everyone. We go there to buy ice cream at the Lands at Hillside Farms, visit the Huntsville Reservoir and take a drive through its bucolic countryside.</p><p>But what&#8217;s it like to grow up in Shavertown? McGrath tells us about his childhood running around neighboring farm fields and weekend visits to nearby Harveys Lake. He lists his favorite places to eat and reflects on how his hometown has changed over the years.</p><p><strong>Player:</strong> Patrick McGrath</p><p><strong>Hometown:</strong> Shavertown, Pennsylvania</p><p><strong>Type:</strong> Small town</p><p><strong>Population: </strong>2,019</p><p><strong>Distance from Wilkes-Barre: </strong>8 miles</p><p><strong>What was it like to grow up in Shavertown? </strong>&#8220;Growing up there was awesome. I was lucky enough to live right next to Hillside Dairy in the middle of that massive farm. With my three brothers and all our buddies we could go outside and stay out of my mom&#8217;s hair. It was great. I always enjoyed growing up outdoors and staying active. I really enjoyed it.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Did you spend a lot of time at Hillside?</strong> &#8220;We used to walk there when we were kids. The road is kind of busy and we&#8217;d cut across and walk down the other side. It was cool growing up there around the cows. I did some community stuff there for school projects to help out. It was a fun time.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Shavertown isn&#8217;t far from Harveys Lake. Did you spend a lot of time there as well?</strong> &#8220;Shavertown is in a good spot. It&#8217;s not too far from the lake and my aunt has a dock out there so we spend a lot of time there over the summer. That&#8217;s definitely a spot I&#8217;ll always come back to.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What makes Shavertown unique in the Back Mountain community?</strong> &#8220;It&#8217;s a smaller town. There&#8217;s a lot of outdoor stuff to do and land around you. Where I grew up it wasn&#8217;t like you could just walk to the house next door.&#8221;</p><p><strong>How has Shavertown changed since you were a kid?</strong> &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if it changed too much. It&#8217;s always been kind of quiet back there. Maybe a few more houses have gone up. The dairy has gotten a lot bigger. For a couple of years it wasn&#8217;t doing too much, but now you look and everyday there&#8217;s people there all the time. I&#8217;m glad to see it&#8217;s doing well.&#8221;</p><p><strong>During your hockey career, did you play in towns similar to Shavertown?</strong> &#8220;Prince Edward Island was a pretty small town like Shavertown. Everybody knew everyone. That was pretty similar. Wheeling was kind of that way too. It&#8217;s not a very big place either.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What are your favorite places to eat in Shavertown?</strong> &#8220;That&#8217;s a tough one. Pizza Perfect, Amelia&#8217;s Diner, KB&#8217;sCoffee House and Dino&#8217;s. Those four, for sure. Those are definitely my go-to places all the time.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What do you look forward to when you go back home in the summer?</strong> &#8220;You get to spend more time with your family and friends on the weekends. Hockey&#8217;s pretty busy and when the season is going on you&#8217;re constantly doing stuff - games and practice all the time. Events you have to go to. It&#8217;s nice to relax back home over the summer and hang out at the lake.&#8221;</p><p><strong>What is the biggest perk about living in your hometown while playing for the Penguins?</strong> &#8220;I get to have home-cooked meals. I don&#8217;t think too many guys get that. I get to sleep in my own bed. Those are pretty good perks. All of my family gets to come to my games. That&#8217;s pretty special that friends and family get to be there like that. I&#8217;m pretty lucky to have that. I know the shortcuts to the rink if there&#8217;s traffic, which helps.&#8221;</p><style>
