Local sports: Wyoming Seminary tops Dallas, 4-1 in boys tennis

HANOVER TWP. &#8212; Holy Redeemer started just one senior on Wednesday. After all, there are only a handful of them left after the Royals graduated 14 players from last year&#8217;s roster.No matter. Redeemer&#8217;s underclassmen have performed like veterans up and down the lineup as well as on the mound. How else to explain three straight Wyoming Valley Conference shutouts for the Royals, the latest a 3-0 road triumph over Hanover Area.&#8220;They&#8217;re resilient,&#8221; Redeemer coach Chris Ritsick said. &#8220;The situation&#8217;s not too big for them. They&#8217;ve been in some tight spots. Every game&#8217;s pretty much been a tight game, and they&#8217;ve made the plays. And they&#8217;ve been ready. They&#8217;re prepared.&#8221;The Royals (5-1) had previously beaten GAR 9-0 and Meyers 2-0 in the past week. They haven&#8217;t allowed a run in league play since a 7-3 win over Nanticoke on April 14.Surprising?&#8220;Definitely. Because you never know,&#8221; Ritsick said. &#8220;They&#8217;re teenagers &#8212; you never know how they&#8217;re going to react in situations. But I couldn&#8217;t be happier with every game, the way they&#8217;ve been improving.&#8221;This time it was sophomore Sean Wills who delivered, striking out four and getting all but the final out of a four-hit shutout of the Hawkeyes. He added an RBI triple to help his own cause.Hanover Area managed to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Tony Molitoris came on and ended the game with one pitch to pick up the save.Through two starts in WVC play, Wills has not allowed an earned run in 12 2/3 innings.&#8220;As a sophomore, he&#8217;s composed on the mound,&#8221; Ritsick said. &#8220;He acts like he&#8217;s a senior on the mound. It&#8217;s early in the season, but the innings he&#8217;s put in, he&#8217;s been very composed and commanding of all three of his pitches.&#8221;Redeemer picked up a run in the second inning on a walk, a balk and an error. Wills&#8217; big hit came in the fourth and Molitoris added an RBI single for some insurance in the fifth.For the Hawkeyes (3-3), all three league losses this season have been shutouts, having lost to Meyers and Wyoming Seminary by matching 1-0 scores.Hanover Area had also played three straight 1-0 games in last year&#8217;s District 2 tournament, winning the quarters and semis before falling in the Class 2A title game. That was the only run the Hawks had allowed in four postseason games.A year later, Hanover Area is still looking for more consistency at the plate to support starting pitchers Kevin Rimmer and Kyle Kowalski. Rimmer struck out six in six innings of work on Wednesday.&#8220;It&#8217;s not hard to figure out what the issue is right now,&#8221; Hawks coach Mike Zapotoski said. &#8220;Our contact swings and our approach at the plate with pitch selection is not very good right now.&#8220;We have the defense and pitching. Our bats will come around. I don&#8217;t know when, but they will.&#8221;In the meantime, the rest of the division has been able to claw the Hawks out of their seemingly perpetual first-place perch.Hanover Area has won four straight division titles, but nearing the midway point of the league schedule, Northwest is up 2.5 games on the Hawks. The Rangers lead Redeemer and Meyers by a half-game for first with a showdown against the Mohawks set for Friday.But the rest of the division isn&#8217;t about to write off Hanover from charging back into the race.&#8220;I certainly wouldn&#8217;t count them out yet,&#8221; Ritsick said. &#8220;They&#8217;re very talented. They&#8217;re a good team. They&#8217;ve been struggling a little bit with the bats, but I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;ll come around. They&#8217;ll be around at the end.&#8221;Meyers 10,Wyoming Seminary 3The Mohawks (5-1) erased an early three-run deficit by busting out for 10 runs in the top of the fourth.Ismael Lake (home run), Keith Ostrowski (double) and Ryan Gilgallon (double) all drove in two runs. Ostrowski went the distance on the mound for the win.Michael Oravic doubled and drove in a run for the Blue Knights (2-4).GAR 6, Nanticoke 3Chris Kolativa pitched a complete game, striking out six for the Grenadiers (3-3). Jeremy Erhardt doubled and Noah Edwards finished 2 for 4 with two RBI.Alec Norton homered for the Trojans (1-6).Northwest 6, MMI Prep 2The first-place Rangers (6-1) came up with some more late-inning magic, breaking a tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win.Brian Hardiman pitched a three-hitter, striking out two.
