Wilkes-Barre council to request bank account proposals, asked to consider switching landfills

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A fire at 190 Miller St. Thursday displaced seven people and resulted in the death of a dog and a cat, with several other pets being taken to a veterinary hospital.</p><p>Neighbors of the victims who had come out of their houses to see what had happened said they had just seen the owner walking the dog a few hours before.</p><p>The fire, called in at about 5:20 p.m., was attributed to a riding mower in the garage of the double-block home. It then spread to the rest of the house.</p><p>Multiple emergency, fire and police units were on scene. One person was taken from the scene after he or she had fainted.</p><p>Acting Fire Chief Robert Fannon said he believed that both sides of the structure were damaged, with damage to one side more severe.</p><p>Fannon said that although the cause of the fire seemed apparent, it was probable that a state police fire marshal would be called in to make a final determination.</p><p>The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance with lodging, food and clothing for the seven residents who lived on both sides of the home, according to Red Cross Regional Communications Manager Dave Skutnik.</p><style>
