MOOSIC &#8212; Missed opportunites almost always come back to haunt athletes regardless of sport.That turned out to be the biggest fault for the RailRiders on Thursday night.Scranton/Wilkes-Barre let two huge chances go by the waysides, while Buffalo rarely let the opportunities go by as the Bisons topped SWB 6-5 to take the series winning three out of four as the eight-game homestand at PNC Field concluded.The RailRiders&#8217; loss ends a streak of nine straight home series wins at PNC Field dating back to last season. It&#8217;s their first series setback since losing two out of three to Syracuse July 7-9 last season.The biggest missed chance for the RailRiders came in the bottom of the second inning when they loaded the bases with no outs and got just one run when Pete Kozma walked to force in a run. But the next three batters, Jonathan Diaz, Ben Gamel and Aaron Judge couldn&#8217;t help bring in any other runs. The team settled for a 1-0 lead after two innings.In the eighth inning, this time down by a run, the RailRiders got runners on first and second with no outs, but again came up empty. This time, Lane Adams couldn&#8217;t execute a sacrifice bunt, and then Kozma hit into an inning-ending doubleplay.&#8220;At any level, especially the high level you have to be able to take advantage when you get in that situation, especially early,&#8221; RailRiders manager Al Pedrique said. &#8220;You lose a lot of games in the first five innings. I don&#8217;t believe when people say that you lose the game in the eighth or ninth. Today, we lost in the second inning when we had the bases loaded and scored one run.&#8221;Meanwhile, Buffalo wasn&#8217;t letting many chances go. The Bisons immediately capitalized on Kozma&#8217;s first error of the season when a bouncer to third brushed off his glove in the third inning. The next batter, A.J. Jimenez made the RailRiders pay launching a two-run homer to left field to put the Bisons in front 2-1.SWB came right back in the bottom half retaking the lead on a long blast by Gary Sanchez, his second mammoth homer of the homestand tied the game at 2-2. Rob Refsnyder later scored on a wild pitch putting the RailRiders in front 3-2. They tacked on two more in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Donovan Solano and a RBI-single from Adams to go ahead 5-2 in what looked to be a good enough lead for a bullpen that has been tremendous over the first few weeks of the season.After Tyler Webb tossed 2 1/3 innings striking out six in relief of Luis Cessa, he left with SWB leading 5-2 with two outs in the seventh. Diego Moreno took over for Webb and allowed a run to score when Jimenez singled in Matt Dominguez cutting the SWB lead to 5-3.In the eighth, the Bisons didn&#8217;t hit a ball hard, but ended up scoring three runs. Andy Burns hit a bunt single with one out. Domonic Brown broke his bat and bounced on into shallow right field. Jesus Montero hit a soft single that had eyes and got through the right side of the infield to score Burns. A soft hit fielder&#8217;s choice brought in the second run of the inning. Jimenez walked with the bases loaded against James Pazos to give Buffalo the 6-5 lead as the team batted around in the frame.Moreno was hitting his spots, but will have to rebound from the soft hits.&#8220;You&#8217;re making your pitches that&#8217;s all you can do,&#8221; Pedrique added. &#8220;Like today, they found a way to put the ball in play. They put the barrel on the ball. They found some holes. &#8220;Cessa, 23, acquired in the December trade that sent lefty Justin Wilson to Detroit, did fairly well in his first start for the RailRiders. But not being stretched out, he only lasted 4 1/3 innings and threw 57 pitches. He gave up just two hits and two runs.&#8220;That one mistake, he left the fastball up in the zone right over the plate (on the home run),&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;Other than that I thought he threw the ball well. He mixed his pitches well, moved the ball around the plate, mixed in sliders and change-ups. We were very pleased to see after the home run, he stayed within himself and kept us in the game.&#8221;Notes: Pedrique said that Slade Heathcott, who was hit on the hand with a pitch on Wednesday, will be re-evaluated on Friday.
