Senators try to revive criminal justice overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators are trying to pass a criminal justice overhaul that would give judges more leeway in sentencing nonviolent drug offenders. An overhaul won approval last fall in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but it stalled when some conservatives suggested that it could let violent offenders out of prison. The measure would also have allowed some nonviolent drug offenders to get reduced prison sentences. Now senators from both parties have announced a reworked bill. It still would give judges discretion to give lesser sentences than federal mandatory minimums and eliminate mandatory life sentences for three-time, nonviolent drug offenders. The new bill drops language that could have allowed reduced sentences for criminals who had possessed a firearm. The original bill had rare bipartisan support in the Senate and backing from President Barack Obama.
