A study published Monday in the journal Health Affairs includes a list of the 10 U.S. hospitals with the highest profit from patient care services in fiscal year 2013. To calculate the rankings, co-authors Ge Bai of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and Gerard F. Anderson of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, analyzed federal data. The "profit per adjusted patient discharge" uses the number of patients discharged from the hospital and makes standard adjustments to account for differences in outpatient care volume, case severity and wages.
