WVC Softball: Hazleton Area shuts down Tunkhannock

Holy Redeemer got to celebrate the program&#8217;s first baseball division title in style.Tim Cavanaugh drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on Thursday to give the Royals a 3-2 win over Hanover Area at Hollenback Park, clinching the WVC Division 3 crown. It was the team&#8217;s 11th straight league win.The Royals had played their first seven seasons up in Division 1 along with bigger schools before realignment moved them into Division 3 in 2015. Redeemer&#8217;s win ended Hanover Area&#8217;s streak of four straight division titles.Jordan Choman finished 3 for 3 while Rob McClay earned the win in relief for the Royals (12-1). The Hawkeyes (4-5) got three hits from Kyle Kowalski, who went the distance on the mound.Hazleton Area 5,Lake-Lehman 2The Cougars (4-4) strung together multiple hits and walks to score three times in the top of the ninth to win in extra innings. Chris Heim doubled and drove in three runs, including one in the ninth.Three Lehman pitchers held Hazleton to four hits. Tyler Kolb went eight innings and added two RBI, including one in the seventh that tied the game, for the Black Knights (4-5).Dallas 1, Tunkhannock 0Dave Simpson delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie, scoring Andrew Kovalick, who had singled and stole second. Aaron Yurko and Nick Kocher (win) combined on the five-hit shut out for the Mounts (5-5).Bobby Gilpin doubled for the Tigers (3-7).GAR 9, Nanticoke 0Austin Yelland and Noah Edwards combined on a five-hit shutout for the Grenadiers (5-5). Edwards drove in two runs while Yelland doubled.Steve Kreitzer doubled for the Trojans (3-9).Pittston Area 9,Coughlin 0The Patriots (4-6) pounded out 14 hits, with Alex McAndrew (4-4, two RBI) and Dylan Spurlin (3-4) each collecting two of the team&#8217;s six doubles.
