<p>Free speech suffered a setback when ESPN fired Curt Schilling for voicing his opposition to transgender laws that permit individuals to use restrooms according to how they self-identify their gender.</p><p>Yes, what he posted on Facebook was crude, nasty, mean-spirited and disgusting. But the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech, allows opinions to be voiced, even if they are all of those things. ESPN&#8217;s action in firing Schilling for voicing his beliefs has a chilling effect on the exercise of free speech.</p><p>ESPN disagrees with Patrick Henry, who is reputed to have said, &#8220;I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,&#8221; and apparently believes that employees do not have the right to espouse views that differ from their employers.</p><p><strong>Daniel Gelbert Flannery</strong></p><p>St. Petersburg, Fla.</p><p>and Pittston</p><style>
