Message of love for children offered at annual Interfaith Tea at Temple B’nai B’rith in Kingston

<p>DALLAS TWP. &#8212; The wood-paneled walls matched the gravitas of the announcement Tuesday &#8212; three new health care programs coming to Misericordia University, including one found nowhere else in Pennsylvania. But Misericordia President Thomas Botzman started with a riff on his frequently mispronounced, and misspelled, name.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s two boats, one man,&#8221; he corrected with a smile after someone said Botz<em>men</em>. He went on to note how people also like to add an &#8220;l&#8221;, making him &#8220;Boltzman,&#8221; which led to some high-brow humor in his school days.</p><p>But about those new programs.</p><p>Botzman described them as a blend of the school&#8217;s emphasis on health care education and liberal arts. They are &#8220;at the intersection of critical thinking skills that are needed by the students in the continued service to others.&#8221;</p><p>Assistant English Professor Amanda Caleb described the new Medical and Health Humanities bachelor&#8217;s degree program beginning in fall of 2017 &#8212; the only one in the state &#8212; as an &#8220;interdisciplinary and inter-professional program that focuses on the human, and on human dignity, with regards to health and illness.</p><p>&#8220;Rather than looking at health and illness just as medical model, we&#8217;re looking at health and illness through social, cultural, spiritual, philosophical and historical context.&#8221;</p><p>The second offering is a &#8220;patient navigator&#8221; program added as a specialization in the Bachelor of Health Science degree. Dean of College of Health Sciences Leamor Kahanov called it a &#8220;unique and innovative program&#8221; leading to a certificate useful for jobs in the growing field of those working across professions to &#8220;advocate for patients, care coordination and navigation of insurance.&#8221;</p><p>The third program is a bachelor of science degree in diagnostic sonography, more commonly known as ultrasound. Program director Sheryl Goss said it &#8220;adds another option for those who are interested in sonography,&#8221; giving a graduate greater career mobility than those earning an associate degree or a certification.</p><p>And that other Botzman bit?</p><p>The president said he once had a classmate name Maxwell, which when coupled with &#8220;Boltzman&#8221; can be a real knee-slapper in the right setting. But, he admitted, you need geeky &#8220;Big Bang Theory&#8221; physics sensibility to make a Maxwell-Boltzmann joke.</p><style>
