Wilkes-Barre City Council meetings to be seen soon on the web

<p>DURYEA &#8212; The council will apply for a grant to purchase body armor for borough police officers after a vote at Tuesday&#8217;s monthly meeting.</p><p>The council will be applying for a grant through the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for approximately $6,700 to purchase the body armor. Duryea will be responsible to match the grant at a cost of 50 percent of the entire cost of the armor.</p><p>Duryea Police Chief Nicholas Lohman wasn&#8217;t available for comment after the meeting. However, during the meeting, Lohman said the armor will be personally fitted to each officer on the force &#8212; part-time or full-time. Each piece of body armor will last the officer five years.</p><p>BJA supports projects in the areas of law enforcement, justice information sharing, countering terrorism, managing offenders, combating drug crime and abuse, adjudication, advancing tribal justice, crime prevention, protecting vulnerable populations and capacity building.</p><p>In other business:</p><p>&#8226; Duryea appointed the following police officers for the month of May, to be used as necessary: Brian Russo, Matthew Fredmonski, Jared Beilman, Ruddy Navarro, Dave Homschek, Thomas Walsh, Jason Barry, Jeremy Jones, Brianne Dunn and Patrick Zippittelli.</p><p>&#8226; The council authorized the Duryea Lions Club No. 6061 to place a new liberty bell sign at the intersection of Main Street and Phoenix Street, alongside the Gene Guarilia sign.</p><p>&#8226; The borough approved WD James Mechanical Contracting Inc. to repair water pipes in the ambulance building.</p><p>&#8226; Attorney Scott Gartley was approved as a labor attorney to be used for police union negotiations, as needed.</p><p>&#8226; The borough will perform an income survey to apply for a Community Development Block Grant for street improvements throughout the borough. The improvements would take place on Railroad Street, Miller Street (between Center Street and Foote Avenue), Short Street, Center Street, Brown Street (off New Brown Street), River Street, North River Street, McCullen Street (off Meyer Street and New Street), Newton Street and Grove Street (between Oak Street and Miller Street).</p><style>
