For overcoming adversity, Wyoming Area’s Grace Gober named UNICO’s Brian Piccolo Award recipient at annual dinner

<p>Matthew Carlson, Wyoming, recently achieved the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program, Eagle Scout. He passed his Eagle Board of Review in November 2015.</p><p>Carlson is the son of Carolyn and Gerald F. Carlson Jr., of Wyoming. He is the grandson of Geraldine and Frederick Asklar, of Wyoming, and Judy and Gerald F. Carlson Sr., of Duryea. He has one brother, Joshua, also a Boy Scout with Troop 366.</p><p>Matthew began scouting as a Tiger Cub at the age of 6 with Troop 366, Wyoming/West Wyoming. While a Cub Scout, he earned many awards and advanced through the ranks to &#8220;cross over the bridge&#8221; from a Webelos to a Boy Scout after earning the highest Cub Scouting Award, &#8220;The Arrow of Light,&#8221; in April 2009.</p><p>Before earning his Eagle Rank, Matthew held a variety of positions within the Troop serving as librarian, quartermaster, assistant patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, scribe, senior patrol leader, and troop guide. He advanced through the ranks of Boy Scouts and became a Life Scout Sept. 17, 2013. Matthew passed his Eagle Board of Review on Nov. 18, 2015 and currently holds the position of assistant Scoutmaster. He has earned 42 merit badges over his Scouting career and earned many awards including the United States Heritage Award, the Mile Swim BSA award, Paul Bunyan Woodsman, and Leave No Trace Awards.</p><p>Matthew is also a brotherhood member of Lowwapaneu Lodge No. 191 of the Order of the Arrow. He also participated in Great Expectations, a youth leadership program and C.O.P.E., a high adventure program at Goose Pond Scout Reservation. He has participated in many camping trips, logging over 100 camping nights, which have included Historic Gettysburg Trails, Beach Jams at Morey&#8217;s Pier in New Jersey, West Point Military Academy, Polar Bears at Camp Acahela, as well as Harvestfest, and Summer Camps at Goose Pond. He also participated in the Pathways program, Merit Badge Colleges at King&#8217;s College, First Aid Meets, Scout-O-Rama&#8217;s, and Historic Traveling Camporees. He has also dedicated innumerable volunteer hours of community service.</p><p>For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Matthew renovated the courtyard of Highland Manor, a rehabilitation and nursing facility, improving the quality of life for many residents there. The courtyard was restored with the rebuilding of the raised planters, benches, lattice framework and wooden supports. Painting and mulching the area to prepare it for spring planting.</p><p>Matthew appreciates all the help he received to complete his Eagle Project from his fellow Boy Scouts of Troop 366. He would like to thank his parents, family members, troop leaders and Scoutmaster Douglas Kaminski, and many others with helping him to complete his project and for their support as he advanced through the ranks of Scouting to Eagle.</p><p>Matthew attributes the support and encouragement of his family, fellow troop members and leaders, and Scoutmaster Douglas Kaminski with helping him achieve Eagle. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase &#8220;Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.&#8221;</p><p>A senior at Wyoming Area, Matthew is on the High Honor Roll, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Science Olympiad team, Teams Physics competition, the Envirothon team, and Key Club. After graduation, he will attend the University of South Florida pursuing a career in aerospace engineering.</p><style>
