<p>Rotarian Kim Harrington led the Rotary Club of the Abingtons this weekend and collected 40 bikes and five sewing machines for an international project called Pedals for Progress, (P4p). Area residents searched garages and cellars, located cycles no longer in use and deposited them at designated drop off points.</p><p>This is the second year Harrington organized and developed this worthwhile project, sending a total of 65 bikes and 10 sewing machines to developing countries.</p><p>Pedals for Progress (P4P) is an international organization which collects these unwanted bikes and sewing machines, refurbishes them and sends them to rural areas of the world where transportation is limited to walking. The recycled cycles will eventually find new homes in rural areas of Nicaragua, Ghana, Albania, Costa Rica or Guatemala through Pedals for Progress. Our recycled bikes will go to Albania.</p><p>A bike can change the life of a family from poverty. In many of these countries, rural people have limited access to medical facilities, no way to get farm produce to markets, and no ability to get a child to school. Bikes can change all of that without adding any pollution of the environment. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 146,00 bicycles, 3,200 used sewing machines, and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing countries. Pedals for</p><p>Progress isn&#8217;t just donating used bicycles and sewing machines, but also helping developing world economies by promoting self-sustaining businesses.</p><p>&#8220;I love how something as simple as a bike can change lives overseas,&#8221; Harrington said.</p><p><strong>Rotary at the Ramada</strong></p><p>The Ramada, on Routes 6 and 11 in South Abington Township, will become our new permanent home when we meet 12:10 p.m. this Thursday, May 5 .
