Abington Heights junior high girls team wins Phil Tochelli Junior High Track and Field championship

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; Susan Scanland, of Clarks Summit, a faculty specialist in the Department of Nursing at The University of Scranton, was among the presenters at the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry&#8217;s 2016 Annual Meeting, held in March in Washington, D.C.</p><p>The a gerontological nurse practitioner and certified dementia practitioner co-presented &#8220;Managing Dementia Residents in Long-Term Care Using Telehealth&#8221; with Brown University Geriatric Psychiatrist Andrew Rosenzweig, M.D. The presentation was based on their experience providing remote dementia care using video technology to Pennsylvania rural nursing homes through Forefront Telecare.</p><p>The conference was attended by nearly 1,000 geriatric psychiatrists.</p><p>Scanland also recently delivered a keynote seminar, entitled &#8220;Communicating for Higher Quality of Life in Dementia,&#8221; in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for Norquest College to more than 300 health care aides.</p><p>The professor is one of two nurse practitioners and one of 20 nurses in the world to earn the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation from the National Speakers Association. The CSP is earned by only 12 percent of the 5,000 professional speakers in the 13-member Global Speakers Federation.</p><p>Through her dementia education firm, Dementia Connection, Scanland has provided more than 600 presentations in 42 states. Her expertise in dementia, geriatric depression, communication in Alzheimer&#8217;s and dementia prevention is based on 34 years of practice in long-term care and assisted living facilities.</p><p>Scanland received her master&#8217;s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and her bachelor&#8217;s degree at Wilkes University. She previously held geriatric faculty positions at Binghamton University and the Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency in Kingston.</p><style>
