Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic to host tea fundraiser in Scranton

<p>SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. &#8212; The Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra, which first performed in 2011, will make its Abington area debut this weekend, with a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13 at the Abington Heights High School. Two of the orchestra&#8217;s youngest members are particularly excited about this show, as it will take place in their own territory.</p><p>Abington Heights High School students Richard Fried and Yelena Cochrane, both of Clarks Summit, joined the Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra this past winter. Both are violinists.</p><p>Cochrane described playing with the group as both &#8220;fun&#8221; and &#8220;challenging.&#8221;</p><p>She said so far it helped her discover &#8220;a lot of new techniques I&#8217;ve never learned before.&#8221;</p><p>Fried said he enjoys being a part of the orchestra, because it allows him to play music he may have considered too difficult to learn on his own.</p><p>&#8220;Together, we sound great,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really challenging music, but as a group, we&#8217;re able to really get through it.&#8221;</p><p>And to him, music in general is about more than just notes on a page.</p><p>&#8220;Music is sort of a universal language &#8211; I describe it best as that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And being able to play an instrument or sing, or perform anything musically sort of expresses a unique side of an individual. Or in the case of the orchestra, a unique side of a group as a whole.&#8221;</p><p>The orchestra, according to its website, is &#8220;the only orchestra based in the Northern Tier Region of Pennsylvania.&#8221;</p><p>The non-profit&#8217;s mission is &#8220;to provide high quality performances of the world&#8217;s finest music to residents throughout the Northern Tier Region.&#8221;</p><p>Tickets for Friday&#8217;s concert will be sold at the door and admission is $5 for students and $10 for adults.
