Our Opinion: Lessen risk of shootings by building schools with safety in mind

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The theme of &#8220;family&#8221; was woven throughout King&#8217;s College&#8217;s 67th commencement ceremony on Sunday afternoon.</p><p>In front of Diocese of Scranton Bishop Joseph Bambera and state Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Wilkes-Barre, the 434 master&#8217;s and baccalaureate students marched around the floor the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, hugging and high-fiving their waiting professors and teachers.</p><p>King&#8217;s brought alumnus Robert J. Ciaruffoli, class of 1975, back as their commencement speaker. Ciaruffoli played a key role in bringing Pope Francis to the United States for the World Meeting of Families last year.</p><p>&#8220;Making a mistake is forgivable,&#8221; he said, recounting a mistake early on in his career at Parente Randolph LLC, an accounting firm.</p><p>He told the soon-to-be college graduates that taking a risk in life may be &#8220;uncomfortable,&#8221; but eventually everyone will become comfortable with their decisions.</p><p>Student government president Jessica Rose Wong, an accounting major, said that King&#8217;s has been &#8220;a home and family&#8221; over the past four years.</p><p>Wong recounted a recent story about moving her things from her apartment at Alumni Hall and, as a joke, asked Gerry Dessoye, the chief of safety and security, &#8220;How a girl can do things when she has to carry her whole life down steps.&#8221; She thought he would just laugh it off, but Dessoye went &#8220;above and beyond without question&#8221; when he provided her a temporary parking pass for the lot and helped then helped her move out of her apartment.</p><p>&#8220;Maybe we&#8217;re thinking about things wrong,&#8221; Wong said. &#8220;Not what is King&#8217;s College, but who is King&#8217;s College.&#8221;</p><p>Mass communications graduate Brielle Warren, of Wilkes-Barre, came to King&#8217;s as a legacy, following in the footsteps of her father, Scott.</p><p>&#8220;It feels amazing to be a second generation King&#8217;s graduate,&#8221; Warren said. &#8220;I feel honored.&#8221;</p><p>Warren believes everyone in the class of 2016 have their &#8220;unique qualities and differences&#8221; but possess the &#8220;ability to accomplish great things.&#8221;</p><p>During the ceremony, King&#8217;s gave honorary doctorates to Ciaruffoli, and two &#8220;friends of the college,&#8221; Patrick J. Solano and Magdalen M. Benish.</p><p>Solano served in World War II and, after the war, dedicated his life to public service. The environmental education facility at Frances Slocum State Park is named after him.</p><p>Benish dedicated her life to honoring Father Jozef Murgas &#8212; the first person to successfully send a wireless message over land in 1905. Funding for The Father Jozef Murgas Room, located on the first floor of King&#8217;s on the Square, was partially secured by Benish.</p><p>&#8220;(We are) Monarchs today,&#8221; Wong said, &#8220;(We are) Monarchs tomorrow.&#8221;</p><style>
