State journey starts for three Wyoming Valley Conference boys volleyball teams

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; The manner in which Wyoming Seminary has won six straight District 2 girls lacrosse titles is impressive.</p><p>The latest of those titles, in a surprisingly dominant, 13-4 win over Coughlin last week, landed the Blue Knights in the state tournament against a team that also has impressive credentials.</p><p>The difference is Garnet Valley&#8217;s resume has been built on the state level.</p><p>As if trying to break through in state competition was not a tall enough task for Wyoming Valley Conference teams, the opponent Wyoming Seminary drew for its Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament opener Wednesday at 7 at Lake-Lehman has won the last two state championships and four of the past five.</p><p>The Jaguars (17-4-1) were unbeaten until going 1-3-1 in the final five games of the regular season. They avenged one of those losses by beating Conestoga in the District 1 quarterfinals before falling to Owen J. Roberts in the semifinals. Garnet Valley bounced back to beat Bishop Shanahan, 19-10, in the third-place game.</p><p>Emily Mathewson, who set the school career scoring record at 278 goals earlier this month, leads Garnet Valley. Junior Madi O&#8217;Brien is already over 100 career goals.</p><p>Temple recruit Kara Nakrasius, a senior, is the team&#8217;s top midfielder. Senior Kylie Young, who is headed to Lafayette, is one of the defensive leaders.</p><p>The teams play in the second game of a PIAA doubleheader.</p><p>The opener is a boys game between District 2 champion Delaware Valley and another District 1 school, Springfield-Delco.</p><p>Kate Romanowski, the junior who leads Wyoming Seminary in scoring, had eight goals in Friday&#8217;s district final. When it was over, she said the team could not rest.</p><p>&#8220;We just have to keep on working really hard,&#8221; Romanowski said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think we can count on this win helping us.&#8221;</p><p>Although Wyoming Seminary is 14-0 all-time in District 2 playoff games by a total of 236-72, the story is different on the state level. The Blue Knights are 1-5 in PIAA games and has been outscored 78-36 in those losses.</p><p>And, the bracket draw got tougher last season when the PIAA began pairing District 2 with District 1 in the first round.</p><p>Radnor ripped Wyoming Seminary, 17-1, in the 2015 first round. Teams from District 1 &#8212; the Philadelphia suburbs &#8212; are 24-2 against the rest of the state while outscoring those opponents by 199 goals over the last six years.</p><p>It all adds up to a potentially busy night for freshman goalie Mia Raineri, who was brilliant during a 12-save effort in the district final.</p><p>&#8220;I call her a &#8216;big-time player&#8217;,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary coach Catie Kersey said. &#8220;She loves playing in these games.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s got that mental toughness.&#8221;</p><p>Another freshman, Christina Kilyanek, has increased her scoring output late in the season.</p><p>Midfielder Abby Straub, a former attack, remains a big part of the offense.</p><p>The Blue Knights are unbeaten within District 2 and 16-3 overall.</p><style>
