MOOSIC &#8212; Throughout his young career, Kyle Higashioka can&#8217;t remember hitting a hot streak with such power.His battery-mate might be just starting to warm up again.Luis Severino pitched six innings of three-hit shutout ball Wednesday, his catcher Higashioka collected two more RBI hits and Tytler Austin launched a three-run homer as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders clubbed Charlotte 6-0 at PNC Field.&#8220;When you&#8217;ve got 98 (miles per hour), you&#8217;ve got to use it,&#8221; Higashioka said.Severino used a lot more.Turning to a biting slider and deceptive changeup, Severino retired 11 consecutive batters from the first through fourth innings and 16 of the final 18 he faced while rolling up seven strikeouts through his six innings.&#8220;Tonight, he had it all going for him,&#8221; Higashioka said. &#8220;Slider, I thought, was super. Fastball command was really good. Changeup was good, as always.&#8220;He looked pretty good.&#8221;The hard-throwing righthander &#8212; who began this season with so much promise as a member of the parent New York Yankees starting rotation that their manager Joe Girardi compared his poise to that of Hall of Famer Greg Maddux &#8212; endured a rough start.After surrendering four runs in the final inning of his previous start for the RailRiders, Severino allowed singles to two of the first three Knights he faced Wednesday.But they managed just one more hit against Severino, who went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA to help the Yankees reach the American League Wild Card game last year but struggled with a mild triceps strain &#8212; and an 0-6 record &#8212; in New York this season before he was optioned back to the RailRiders on May 30.&#8220;He&#8217;s just a competitor,&#8221; Higashioka said of Severino, who left the clubhouse before it opened to reporters following the game. &#8220;He never loses confidence in himself, which is something you have to have as a pitcher. He knows he&#8217;s got the stuff to get himself out of a tough situation. And he trusts it.&#8221;The RailRiders are developing tremendous trust in Higashioka&#8217;s bat right now.He bounced an RBI single in the hole between shortstop and third base in the bottom of the first inning, then drilled a run-scoring double into the left field corner for the game&#8217;s final run in the sixth. The two run-producing shots gave Higashioka six hits in seven at-bats against Charlotte pitching over two games.His 2-for-4 night raised his batting average to .400 in nine games with the RailRiders since being promoted from Double-A Trenton, with three homers and three doubles among his 14 hits.&#8220;I&#8217;ve had some good weeks,&#8221; Higashioka said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know of as many with as much power. Three home runs since I&#8217;ve been here has probably been one of the best streaks I&#8217;ve been on.&#8221;He wasn&#8217;t the only one smoking the ball for the RailRiders.Austin hustled his way into a one-out double in the second inning, then scored when Jake Cave drove a triple to deep center. Higashioka&#8217;s bouncer brought Cave home with a 2-0 RailRiders lead, then Austin extended it the next inning.He blasted an opposite-field, three run homer over the right field wall for a 5-0 lead in the third while giving Severino plenty of support to work with.Cave laced a single and scored the game&#8217;s last run when Higashioka rocketed his double to left field in the sixth.&#8220;It&#8217;s always easier to hit when guys around you are hitting,&#8221; Higashioka said.Not to mention a lot less stress on the starting pitcher.&#8220;It&#8217;s huge,&#8221; Higashioka said. &#8220;As much as you want the guy (your pitcher) to put up zeroes, it takes a little pressure off when you get that lead.
