Wilkes-Barre City Council asks why department heads are no shows

<p>AVOCA &#8212; The borough council president told residents at Thursday&#8217;s monthly council meeting that new LED street lights would not be going up as quickly as expected.</p><p>John Boone informed those in attendance that there is no timetable right now for when the installation of the lights will begin, but the contract with PPL for the lights was signed and submitted and the lights have been ordered.</p><p>Borough Secretary Kelly O&#8217;Brien said the delay is due to PPL finishing other projects and that the process is &#8220;taking longer than expected.&#8221;</p><p>The motion to switch to LED street lights was approved at council&#8217;s March meeting. Boone said in May that the lights would be installed prior to the start of June.</p><p>In other business, council members voted to:</p><p>&#8226; Make payments toward construction of the new borough building, including $83,796.75 to Spotts Bros. for general construction, $7,263.54 to L.H. Reed for plumbing and $13,199.40 to Aircon Service Co. for heating and air conditioning work.</p><p>&#8226; Replace two spring rider assembly kits for the duck and pony rides at the West Avoca playground at a cost of $1,093.</p><p>&#8226; Re-hire 24 part-time police officers for the months of July, August and September.</p><p>&#8226; Donate $50 to the Arthritis Foundation in honor of the borough&#8217;s longtime street commissioner Walter Volch, who passed away on June 3.</p><style>
