Holy Redeemer wins second consecutive 2A state softball title

<p>PRINGLE &#8212; The borough will use a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant to pave Courtright Street, council members said at Thursday night&#8217;s meeting.</p><p>The council approved the retention of Wayco Inc. at about $68,000 for the first part of the project, the paving of Courtright Street from Evans and North streets, following a bid opening earlier in the week.</p><p>According to borough Secretary Karen Butler, the rest of the project, which will include the part of the street from Grove to Evans streets, is expected to be bid out and on the agenda for next month&#8217;s council meeting.</p><p>Council members also discussed a proposed landlord/rental ordinance.</p><p>Councilman Christopher Williams said the original vision of the ordinance called for simple registration.</p><p>&#8220;We want to know who&#8217;s living where,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Williams cautioned if the borough got into the area of inspections, additional government regulations would apply.</p><p>Councilman Joseph Piazza stressed the importance of overseeing rental properties.</p><p>&#8220;What if you had a difficult neighbor living next to you?&#8221; he said. &#8220;What if they had chickens?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t have a problem with the chickens,&#8221; said Councilman Joe Baran, referring to a previous incident in which a resident was directed to remove chickens from her yard.</p><p>Council President Michael Berish said the borough had already expended about $1,000 in preparing the ordinance, including legal fees. Berish said the council will schedule a work session before July&#8217;s meeting to discuss the ordinance, which he hopes will appear on the upcoming agenda.</p><p>Councilwoman Mary Watkins requested the police department provide more detailed information in reports.</p><p>Berish said knowing the specifics of crime in the borough would allow any hot spots to be immediately addressed.</p><p>&#8220;The police department does do a fantastic job,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Four drug arrests, that&#8217;s fantastic.&#8221;</p><p>In another matter, Piazza requested the council contact state Rep. Aaron Kaufer to request that they be updated about available grants.</p><p>&#8220;I see other boroughs receiving grants,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I haven&#8217;t been aware of those we&#8217;re eligible for.&#8221;</p><style>
