Funerals, fear and uncertainty loom as Orlando grieves

Hundreds flock to check out Corvettes in Hazle Township

<p>DALLAS &#8212; Saturday proved to be the perfect day for an outdoor market, just ask the staff at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.</p><p>The day&#8217;s sunny skies and warm weather helped draw more than a thousand guests to the center&#8217;s 32nd annual &#8220;Market on the Pond&#8221; on Saturday.</p><p>&#8220;Originally, the auxiliary group wanted to do one big fundraiser, so they didn&#8217;t have to do multiple ones every year,&#8221; Meadows Volunteer Coordinator Betty Sorchik said of the market&#8217;s creation.</p><p>&#8220;Every year it has grown. Now, it goes around both ponds and through the buildings.&#8221;</p><p>Proceeds from the event aid residents at the center, a short- and long-term rehabilitative and nursing center that currently holds about 130 residents.</p><p>More than 120 vendors filled the center&#8217;s property, selling everything from clothing and jewelry to household and homemade goods. A pavilion near the pond in the back of the property supplied hungry guests with lunch, including hot dogs, meatball subs and pierogis, while the pond at the front of the property was surrounded by vendors and basket raffles.</p><p>Sorchik said residents of the center and community enjoy coming to the annual event. While there are new vendors every year, many have been selling at the market for ages, she added.</p><p>Paula Yozwiak and her daughter, Kara, have been setting up shop at the market for more than a decade.</p><p>&#8220;We come every year, probably since I was about 5 years old,&#8221; Kara said. &#8220;We&#8217;re pretty well-known because of our clothing options. We have a lot of repeat customers.&#8221;</p><p>The Yozwiaks&#8217; stand, which was set up across from the book sale near the front lake, was filled with clothing of all colors and sizes. They said people enjoy coming to the event to socialize and browse through a wide array of items.</p><p>&#8220;People find it fun and enjoyable,&#8221; said M.J. Baloga, who helps the Yozwiaks. &#8220;It&#8217;s really a nice affair.&#8221;</p><p>One of the biggest draws was the chance to win a raffle basket.</p><p>In all, 53 raffle baskets and 39 gift certificates were donated to the event from local businesses.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very grateful to have the support of the our local businesses and volunteers,&#8221; Sorchik said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve received a great amount of baskets with high quality items.&#8221;</p><p>Barbara Chiarucci, of Dallas, came to the event with her daughter, Karyn. She said that they have been coming to the market for years.</p><p>&#8220;We enjoy seeing a variety of items,&#8221; Barbara said.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good day out, a good time to socialize,&#8221; Karyn added.</p><p>The two met up with friends just before closing time, discussing how they&#8217;ve watched the market grow over the years.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been nice to see it grow, and how it still remains very organized,&#8221; Janice Peiffer said.</p><p>Sorchik and her assistant, Camille Fioti, said they cannot be more thankful for the support for their volunteers and community members.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really not able to do this without our volunteers and community,&#8221; Fioti said, noting that much of the market&#8217;s success is from word of mouth.</p><style>
