Mother’s Day cards are flowers and poetry. Father’s Day cards? A lot different

<p>Throughout our lives, friends, family members and even strangers impart on us wisdom of various kinds.</p><p>We asked readers and staff at the Times Leader &#8220;What&#8217;s the best advice your dad has ever given to you?&#8221;</p><p>The answers, as one would guess, varied greatly and covered everything from living life to the fullest, to drinking good beer to always do the right thing and to look for the silver lining of all situations.</p><p>We also included some advice from dads to their children.</p><p>From us at the Times Leader to all the dads out there, happy Father&#8217;s Day.</p><p>Let us now what your dad&#8217;s best advice was to you at ae@www.timesleader.com or on Twitter @TLarts.</p><p><strong>William Bucks</strong></p><p>Submitted by Williams&#8217; daughter, Patricia Dix, of Mountain Top.</p><p>&#8220;Look for the silver lining whenever a cloud appears in the blue. Remember somewhere the sun is shining and so the right thing to do is make it shine for you. A heart full of joy and gladness will always banish sorrow and strife so always look for the silver lining and try to find the sunny side of life.&#8221;</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Bronis Voveris</strong></p><p>Submitted by Ronald Voveris of Pittston.</p><p>&#8220;The best words of wisdom my father imparted on us seven children was to study hard, keep pushing yourself through life and study music because it is everywhere.&#8221;</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Steve Farkas</strong></p><p>Submitted by his son, Tim Farkas, Times Leader executive editor</p><p>&#8220;A sign of old age is when your memories turn to regrets.&#8221;</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Henry Haase</strong></p><p>Submitted by his daughter, Sarah, Times Leader features editor</p><p>My dad&#8217;s advice was instilled by example and although I haven&#8217;t mastered everything he&#8217;s taught, I do try to follow that example. He is always kind to everyone he meets. He is patient. He hates when he loses, but that doesn&#8217;t happen to often.</p><p>He&#8217;s also an instigator but plays if off more like encouragement.</p><p>But, if there&#8217;s any words of wisdom that I&#8217;ll hold on to, it&#8217;s &#8220;don&#8217;t waste your time with light beer,&#8221; and &#8220;on the grill, all meat should be medium well.&#8221;</p><p>Practical and to the point.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>George Venesky</strong></p><p>Submitted by his son, Tom, Times Leader outdoors writer</p><p>Growing up hunting and fishing with my dad, he always stressed safety and respect for the outdoors.</p><p>Handling a firearm in a safe manner was the advice he always stressed whenever we went hunting together, and it&#8217;s something that will always be the priority whenever I&#8217;m in the field.</p><p>My dad also taught me to respect the places where we enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing together. Don&#8217;t litter, be safe and hunt and fish in an ethical manner.</p><p>That advice from my dad has shaped my appreciation for hunting, fishing and the outdoors.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Gene Axton</strong></p><p>Submitted by his son, Gene, Times Leader features reporter</p><p>My dad passed down a lot to me: his name, his height, his love for Pittsburgh sports; but the most important thing I received from him is an appreciation for helping people. He carried elderly neighbor&#8217;s bags to their cars when he managed a local grocery store; now he fixes their cars for little more than a loaf of homemade bread (OK, that&#8217;s worth a lot). Hopefully I can help just as many people with my words as he has with his actions.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Bill Pernisek</strong></p><p>Submitted by his daughter, Judith Minsavage, Community News Group office manager</p><p>My dad, was a man of few words. I think his best advice to me was through the exemplary way he lived his life. He gave me an appreciation of family, a love of life, a penchant for fairness and his talent as a musician. I&#8217;m blessed.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>John Brioc</strong></p><p>Submitted by his daughter, Geri Gibbons, Times Leader reporter</p><p>My dad died when I was 7, and yet I have a head full of memories. He always encouraged me to read and to write and to do my very best.</p><p>Dad gave me two pieces of advice, one that I took and one that I didn&#8217;t take. The first one was to play a musical instrument. Try as I might on both the cello and the accordion, I wasn&#8217;t able to accomplish that goal.</p><p>He also told me to love my mother well.</p><p>Up until her death in 1997, I tried to do my best to accomplish that directive. I think it embodied a love for family and a respect for life that has sustained me.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Jerry Mizenko</strong></p><p>Submitted by his daughter, Melanie, Times Leader reporter</p><p>My dad, Jerry, died from pancreatic cancer in March 2015. But he was around when I was diagnosed with my cancer, he told me to &#8220;Live well and love often.&#8221;</p><p>I was 23 when he told me that, but it sticks with me and it remains my motto.</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Terry Kellar</strong></p><p>Submitted by his son, Travis, Times Leader reporter</p><p>I&#8217;ve encountered some pretty dramatic changes in my personal life this year, and my dad has been my go-to guy through it all.</p><p>At an especially low point earlier this year, I asked him what it meant to be a good man, or how to tell if I was on the right track in my life.</p><p>What he told changed my entire outlook, and suddenly made everything so much clearer.</p><p>&#8220;Son, just do the right thing, even when nobody is watching. That&#8217;s what makes you a good man.&#8221;</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Jim McCabe </strong></p><p>Here&#8217;s something a little different. Jim has three children and this is some advice he has passed on to his children. He is the Times Leader&#8217;s circulation manager.</p><p>&#8220;Lou Holtz, one of the greatest football head coaches at Notre Dame said &#8216;If you have to pause for one second to think it&#8217;s wrong. It is.&#8217; That was short but it&#8217;s very true if you think about it.&#8221;</p><p>***</p><p><strong>Robert Vanderveken</strong></p><p>Robert&#8217;s son is 2 months old and doesn&#8217;t quite understand everything his dad, in charge of digital operations for the Times Leader, says to him but Robert offers advice anyway.</p><p>When he is fussing during a diaper change I say, &#8220;You should appreciate this now, when you are an adult you will have to pay big money for someone to change your underwear for you.&#8221;</p><p>I&#8217;ve also told him, &#8220;All babies spit up, don&#8217;t feel self conscious about it,&#8221; and every day when I leave the house I tell him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be a burden to your poor mother.&#8221;</p><style>
