Barn weddings all the rage, but not all love and happiness

<p>NUANGOLA &#8212; When Liz Hines, of Mountain Top, was a little girl, one scene in Disney&#8217;s &#8220;The Little Mermaid&#8221; really scared her.</p><p>&#8220;When Ariel is attacked by the sea witch, Ursula,&#8221; Hines said. &#8220;It freaked me out.&#8221;</p><p>Now 17 and portraying the title character in &#8220;The Little Mermaid&#8221; through July 10 at Theatre at the Grove, Hines is more likely to be impressed rather than frightened by the imposing Ursula.</p><p>&#8220;Her make-up is insane,&#8221; Hines said of the sea witch, who seems to be part devil and part octopus.</p><p>The musical boasts plenty of cheerier characters, too, such as Ariel&#8217;s friend Flounder, who is a fish, and Sebastian, a crab who sings about how the mermaid should enjoy life in the underwater kingdom her father, King Triton, rules. &#8220;Everything&#8217;s better, down where it&#8217;s wetter,&#8221; Sebastian insists. &#8220;Take it from me!&#8221;</p><p>But Ariel has fallen in love with a human prince named Eric and wants to exchange her tail for legs so she can join him on land. There&#8217;s a lot of longing going on, expressed by four characters in the number &#8220;If Only.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a song for Eric, Sebastian, King Triton and Ariel,&#8221; Hine said. &#8220;The harmony is gorgeous. I just love doing that.&#8221;</p><p>Disney&#8217;s version of &#8220;The Little Mermaid&#8221; lets Ariel&#8217;s dreams come true, but it&#8217;s based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale in which the mermaid doesn&#8217;t quite achieve her goal.</p><p>&#8220;She dissolves into air&#8221; in that earlier tale, said Hines, who much prefers the adjustments Walt Disney made.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a sucker for a happy ending,&#8221; she said with a laugh.</p><style>
