Alison Keener came through with the championship-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth to give Nanticoke a 3-2 victory over Greater Pittston on Tuesday to capture the District 16 Little League major softball title.Kasidy Slusser starred on the mound, striking out 13 for the win. She also had two hits and two RBI at the plate while scoring the winning run. Lizzie Mendrzycki had two singles and Olivia Nice added one.Greater Pittston pitcher Bernadette Lieback struck out five and had a hit herself. Sage Wiedlich doubled. John Kehl had four hits, finishing with a double, a triple and three RBI.Matt Taleroski (two RBI) and Justin Darden (four RBI) added three hits apiece while Curtis Tokach pitched a two-hit shutout. Jim Oschal and Mike Caravaggio each singled for Back Mountain.Nanticoke 9,Wilkes-Barre 4Derek Kurkoski went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI to top a Nanticoke offense that jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. Kris Rynkiewicz added two hits.Wilkes Barre got a triple from Austin Yelland, who went 2 for 3 and drove in a run.COLLEGESMAC academic honorsA total of 22 student-athletes from local schools have been named to the MAC All-Academic teams for the winter/spring semester.
